Freelance Script Coverage Assistant information

What does a Freelance Script Coverage Assistant do?

A Freelance Script Coverage Assistant reads and evaluates screenplays, scripts, or manuscripts, providing written summaries and critical analysis known as 'coverage.' Their reports help producers, agents, and studios quickly assess whether a script is worth further development or investment. Responsibilities often include summarizing the plot, commenting on strengths and weaknesses, and making recommendations. As freelancers, they typically work on a project-by-project basis for production companies, literary agencies, or independent filmmakers.

What is the difference between Freelance Script Coverage Assistant vs Freelance Script Reader?

Work EnvironmentRemote, freelanceRemote, freelance
Employer UsageProduction companies, agenciesProducers, writers, agencies
Search IntentSeeking coverage services, career infoLooking for script evaluations, insights

While both roles involve reviewing scripts, a Freelance Script Coverage Assistant primarily assists with creating detailed coverage reports, including summaries and critiques. A Freelance Script Reader focuses on reading scripts to evaluate their quality and potential, often providing initial feedback. Both roles are remote, freelance, and industry-focused, but differ in their specific responsibilities and output.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Freelance Script Coverage Assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Script Coverage Assistant, you need strong analytical reading skills, a solid understanding of screenplay structure, and familiarity with industry terminology, often supported by a background in film studies or screenwriting. Proficiency with script formatting software like Final Draft and knowledge of online submission platforms are typically required. Excellent written communication, attention to detail, and the ability to deliver constructive feedback make someone stand out in this position. These skills are crucial for providing valuable insights to producers and writers, helping them assess scripts efficiently and make informed development decisions.

How does a Freelance Script Coverage Assistant typically interact with writers, producers, and development teams?

As a Freelance Script Coverage Assistant, you will primarily communicate with development executives, literary managers, or producers rather than directly with writers. Your role is to provide objective assessments and detailed notes on scripts, which help guide industry professionals in their decision-making process. While you may not be involved in face-to-face meetings, your written feedback is a crucial part of the collaborative workflow, and clear, insightful coverage can lead to more assignments or long-term relationships with studios and agencies.

Job description

Stewart Talent Los Angeles is offering part time in-person, remote, or hybrid internships which provide amazing opportunities to learn about the entertainment industry from a thriving talent agency.
This internship can begin as early as mid May and we are looking for at least a 4 month commitment. School credit is required and a time commitment of about 12-20 hours a week. Our office hours are 9:00am to 7:00pm (Pacific) Monday through Friday with Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday being in-person (interns have the option to be in-person, remote, or a hybrid during these days) and Monday/Friday being remote. We treat this internship as a serious position with a high level of responsibility.
We are seeking passionate, hardworking, motivated & organized individuals. Candidates must have attention to detail, a professional & pleasant demeanor, basic computer skills, and a desire to learn. Remote interns will need: a cell phone, a functioning computer with reliable high-speed internet access, the ability to download software/apps/files, some kind of video editing software, and the ability to maintain LA working hours (9:00am - 7:00pm Pacific time with an hour lunch). In-person interns will need: Reliable transportation to our office in Los Angeles (Mid-Wilshire / Miracle Mile area). Reimbursement for parking (at pre-determined parking lots) will be provided. Hybrid Interns will need all of the above.
Intern duties include, but are not limited to, editing self-tapes and client reels, emailing out daily casting notices from Deadline, generating client submission pitches, updating info in our internal databases, completing character based script coverage, and other general administrative tasks such as calendar upkeep and file organization. At the end of the internship you will have learned how to use Breakdown Services, InEntertainment, IMDBPro, and other industry related programs.
Our lead assistant supervises and gives feedback to the remote interns via emails with tasks and Facetime/Phone Calls/Zoom meetings throughout the day. The agents also try to schedule meetings with each of our interns throughout their internship to discuss the agency/industry and relevant topics.
Goals for the interns would be to learn how operations at an agency work. From inputting appointments, editing self-tapes and then inputting *Pin* dates in the client's calendar for a specific project, the interns observe and aid the process in which a client is hired. They also learn to hone valuable transferable skills like multitasking and prioritizing tasks in order to reach deadlines. They get first-hand experience from start to finish how talent and their representatives go about obtaining an acting job. This goes from viewing the breakdown, inputting a submission, exporting pitches, viewing appointments with the applicable materials (sides/script), editing a self-tape audition, submitting via the appropriate platform (EcoCast/Vimeo/CastIt), updating calendars with client avails, and tracking casting notifications on trade websites like Deadline.
Stewart Talent has offices in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Atlanta. Stewart Talent is always striving to grow and challenge the norms of standard business to better serve our clients in this ever changing industry.
Salary: School credit only.
Interviews will be held in Mid April
