What is freelance science writing?

Freelance science writing involves creating articles, reports, blog posts, or other written content about scientific topics for various clients on a contract basis. Science writers translate complex research and scientific concepts into clear, engaging language for a range of audiences, such as the general public, students, or industry professionals. Freelancers in this field work independently, often pitching story ideas to magazines, websites, or organizations, and may write about subjects like health, technology, environment, or space. This career requires strong writing skills, a solid understanding of scientific topics, and the ability to communicate clearly with both scientists and non-experts.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance science writer?

To thrive as a Freelance Science Writer, you need a solid understanding of scientific concepts, excellent writing skills, and typically a degree in science or journalism. Familiarity with research databases, citation management software, and content management systems is often required. Strong soft skills include curiosity, self-motivation, and the ability to communicate complex information clearly for diverse audiences. These skills ensure accuracy, credibility, and engaging content that meets the needs of clients and readers.

How do freelance science writers typically find and secure consistent work?

Freelance science writers often secure assignments by building strong relationships with editors, pitching story ideas to publications, and maintaining an updated portfolio of their work. Many also join professional networks or online platforms dedicated to freelance writing, which offer job listings and opportunities to connect with potential clients. While the freelance landscape can be competitive, regularly pitching fresh, timely ideas and demonstrating expertise in specific scientific fields can help writers develop a steady workflow over time.

Job description

About Us

Radical Numerics is an AI research lab building general biological intelligence. Our mission is to master the code of life, and our purpose is to reduce human suffering.

Our team created Evo, and started the field of generative genomics. Our work was featured on the cover of Science, and presented by our CEO on the main stage of TED2025. Evo was used to create the first AI gene therapy tool CRISPR-Cas9, and the first AI whole genome from scratch. Evo 2, featured in Nature, is the largest fully open source AI project across any domain.

Radical Numerics is bringing the rigor of distributed systems, model architecture, and numerics research to the challenges of biology. Weโ€™ve redesigned the foundation model training stack to turn the worldโ€™s raw scientific data (e.g. biological sequences, experiments, and physical processes), into intelligible, generative models that can expand and accelerate what humanity can understand, design, and cure.

The same generative breakthroughs that enable lifeโ€‘saving cures also lower the barrier to creating engineered threats and AIโ€‘generated bioweapons. We believe these forces are inseparable. Radical Numerics was founded to develop both the power to design and the responsibility to defend.

About the Role

Radical Numerics is looking for a Marketing Associate to help build and scale our marketing function. As our first dedicated marketing hire, you'll own the execution of our marketing and communications initiatives, turning complex technical work into clear, compelling stories for customers, partners, and the broader scientific community.

You'll help drive projects from concept through execution, including our website, technical videos, product content, educational explainers, conference materials, and digital campaigns. You'll coordinate crossโ€‘functional efforts across the company, working closely with our researchers and engineers to translate cuttingโ€‘edge research into impactful marketing, while managing external agencies and creative partners as needed.

This is a handsโ€‘on role at a fastโ€‘moving startup where you'll have significant ownership and broad responsibility from day one. Success will come from strong judgment, resourcefulness, and a bias toward action. If you enjoy bringing structure to ambiguity, juggling multiple priorities, and delivering highโ€‘quality work across a wide range of marketing initiatives, you'll thrive in this role.

What Youโ€™ll Do Project and Vendor Management
  • Drive execution of major marketing projects, e.g., website design, company videos.
  • Source, brief, and manage specialized vendors and freelancers (designers, video producers, developers) for work that's better built externally.
  • Coordinate with production vendors using the same model as our last release: the internal team writes the content, you manage the process, timeline, and vendor relationship to get it produced and shipped.
  • Track timelines, budgets, and deliverables across multiple concurrent workstreams.
Content and Campaigns
  • Coordinate video projectsโ€”from company vision to technical explainersโ€”pairing internal researchers and engineers on content with outside vendors on production.
  • Partner with the technical team, who write the substance of technical and researchโ€‘adjacent content; you shape it for the audience, manage production, and help to get it published.
  • Own execution of Radical Numerics' social and web presence with a consistent voice.
  • Support demand generation across email, content, and events.
Event and Marketing Ops
  • Plan and execute Radical Numerics' presence at scientific conferences, industry events, and government forums, coordinating logistics, messaging, and postโ€‘event followโ€‘up to maximize impact.
  • Manage event timelines, vendors, and crossโ€‘functional stakeholders to ensure highโ€‘quality execution from planning through completion.
  • Use modern marketing automation, CRM, and analytics tools to streamline workflows, measure performance, and maximize the impact of a lean marketing team.
  • Build and improve scalable marketing operations processes that enable efficient campaign execution and dataโ€‘driven decisionโ€‘making.
What Weโ€™re Looking For
  • Comfortable sourcing, briefing, and managing external vendors and freelancers.
  • Strong project management instinctsโ€”you keep multiple moving pieces on track without needing much oversight.
  • Comfortable working alongside technical and scientific teamsโ€”you don't need to be the primary writer of technical content, but you know how to shape and shepherd it.
  • Scrappy and startupโ€‘paced: high ownership, low ego, comfortable wearing many hats and figuring things out as you go.
  • High ownership, low ego, and a bias toward action in ambiguous environments.
  • Genuinely curious about biological AI, biosecurity, or the life sciences.
  • 2+ years in marketing, communications, or a related role, ideally at a startup or fastโ€‘moving company.

Radical Numerics is committed to equal employment opportunity and does not discriminate in any employment opportunities or practices based on an individual's race, color, creed, gender (including gender identity and gender expression), religion (all aspects of religious beliefs, observance or practice including religious dress or grooming practices), marital status, registered domestic partner status, age, national origin or ancestry (including language use restrictions and possession of a driverโ€™s license issued under California Vehicle Code section 12801.9), natural hair, physical or mental disability, political affiliation, medical condition (including cancer or a record or history of cancer, and genetic characteristics), sex (including pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding or related medical condition), genetic information, sexual orientation, military and veteran status or any other consideration made unlawful by federal, state, or local laws. It also prohibits unlawful discrimination based on the perception that anyone has any of those characteristics, or is associated with a person who has or is perceived as having any of those characteristics.
