Overview
This position is responsible for the diagnostic preparation of histology slides, performing histopathological tests, maintenance tasks, quality control and quality compliance with regulatory YNHH and University standards. Responsibilities include accessing and grossing of small specimens, core biopsies, and large simple biopsy specimens under the supervision of a certified Pathologist Assistant and or Pathologist.
Additional duties include: Responsible for the preparation of diagnostic slides by fixation and processing of tissue blocks, embedding with proper orientation, microtomy, hematoxylin and eosin staining as well as special staining techniques; muscle and nerve biopsy techniques. Accessioning and prosection of simple specimens, core biopsies, large simple biopsies and non-complex specimens under the supervision of a certified Pathologist Assistant or Pathologist. Attain knowledge of the laboratory computer system to record results. Maintains technical and diagnostic accuracy in the technical areas of the laboratory. Maintains neat and accurate records of test results. Prepares reagents standards and controls as needed. Observes all hospital and laboratory policies and safety practices and maintains a safe, clean, and prepared work area. Performs and documents quality control procedures and instrument preventive maintenance; notifies supervisor and/or Director of significant and critical malfunctions of equipment. Performs duties according to schedule to maintain appropriate workflow and timely completion; participates in the overall quality control program of the laboratory; ensures compliance with all regulatory, YNHH and University standards. Assist with the training of residents, medical students, and fellows. Assist with laboratory inventory. Other related duties as assigned by manager. There may be exposure to disagreeable odors, infectious materials, radioactive, toxic and other hazardous substances. Work requires visual strain due to prolonged/extended close examination of specimens and use of microscopy (light or fluorescent), prolonged periods of standing and walking, and ability to lift objects weighing 50lbs. Provide cross coverage and support in other laboratory areas as operational needs require, with appropriate training provided.
Schedule/Shift: Full-Time - 37.5 HRS, Weekdays 4:00pm - 12:00am. Occasional early mornings, evenings, weekends, holiday/recess periods may also be required.
Required Skills and Abilities
1. Must possess excellent technical and theoretical ability in clinical histology.
2. Demonstrated ability to work effectively within clinical and other diverse groups.
3. Demonstrated ability to distinguish results of various tests and acknowledge the accuracy of the results i.e. special stain.
4. Considerable knowledge of laboratory instrumentation.
5. Ability for tolerance and stamina. Ability to sit in one position for long periods of time. Good motor skills, including hand-eye coordination. Ability to maintain repetitive motion tasks.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills
1. Certification as HT (ASCP) or HTL (ASCP) or board eligible within one year of employment is required.
2. Bachelor of Science degree or educational requirements sufficient to meet the qualifications of Standard 493.1489 of CLIA are required: associate degree in laboratory sciences or medical laboratory technology or 60 semester hours from an accredited institution (minimum of 24science courses) and prior related work experience.
Principal Responsibilities
1. Performs specialized laboratory tests and procedures in such areas as histology, cytology, cytogenics, medical technology, and histocompatibility. Records results. Interprets and analyzes results of test and procedures. 2. Tests for and ensures quality control of slides, specimens and cultures. Sets up, operates and maintains laboratory equipment. 3. Oversees and instructs support staff. Serves as a source of information on specialized laboratory techniques and equipment operation. 4. Prepares specimens, tissue, bodily fluid samples, and other matter for analysis and diagnosis using specialized laboratory techniques. 5. Stains and mounts slides, prepares specialized solutions and media; and cultures tissues. 6. Develops and modifies laboratory techniques and procedures. Orders and maintains inventory of supplies. May photograph specimens and other matter and develop film. 7. Performs additional functions incidental to laboratory activities.
Required Education and Experience
Six years of related work experience, four of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and high school level education; or four years of related work experience and an Associate's degree, or little or no work experience and a Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
