Both roles require scientific credentials but differ mainly in work environment and client engagement.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Freelance Science Consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Science Consultant, you need an advanced degree in a scientific discipline, strong analytical skills, and expertise in scientific research or industry applications. Familiarity with data analysis software, scientific databases, and project management tools is typically required. Outstanding communication, problem-solving, and client management skills help you stand out in this role. These competencies ensure you can deliver expert advice, manage complex projects, and build lasting client relationships in a competitive, independent environment.

What types of clients and projects can I expect to work with as a freelance science consultant?

As a freelance science consultant, you'll typically engage with a diverse range of clients, including research organizations, biotech firms, educational institutions, and sometimes government agencies. Projects may involve data analysis, literature reviews, technical writing, grant applications, or advising on experimental design. The variety keeps the work interesting, but it also means you'll need to quickly adapt to different scientific fields and client expectations. Building strong communication skills and staying current in your areas of expertise will help you succeed in these dynamic collaborations.

What is freelance science consulting?

Freelance science consulting involves providing expert advice, research, analysis, or project management in scientific fields on a contract or project basis. Freelance science consultants typically work independently for multiple clients such as businesses, universities, or government agencies. They may be involved in tasks like data analysis, technical writing, regulatory compliance, or developing research strategies. This career offers flexibility, the ability to choose projects, and the opportunity to work across various industries. Consultants often need strong scientific backgrounds and the ability to communicate complex information clearly.

Job description

About GEMIC
Gemic is a global business strategy and innovation consultancy aimed at helping leading corporations and institutions create sustainable growth through a richer understanding of the emerging shifts in culture, business, and technology via a human-centered approach.
We currently have 4 distinct practices within our organisation that focus our offerings in specific "hubs," building expertise and growing clients in each area: Societal Impact, Social Tech, Brand-led Growth, and Health.
Our teams are made up of anthropologists, philosophers, economists, sociologists, political scientists, and futurists working together through research and strategy to develop design-led solutions.
List of Roles/Areas of Expertise we are looking for:
Visual/Graphic Designers
Presentation Designers
Video Editors
Filmmakers
Motion Designers
Illustrators
3D Designers
About the Role
The nature of work often calls for outputs and deliverables that clearly articulate what is typically unspoken or unseen; things like social behaviour, belief systems, and relationships with technology. These intangibles shape human experience but often lack a vocabulary and voice.
The primary role of a Freelance Visual Designer at Gemic is to help our consultants share their learnings and proposed solutions through visualising evidence, portraying the lives of research participants, and building explanatory models and frameworks that distil our learnings into memorable concepts and ideas.
By applying to this role, you will be entered into our talent pool of creative freelancers to be considered for future short and long-term projects. This is a remote position and you must reside in North America (We prefer those working in Eastern Standard Time).
Key responsibilities
  • Developing the visual communication of client-facing deliverables: Information design and architecture, data visualisation, and graphic presentation of various learnings, analysis and solutions.
  • Developing graphics, motion/video elements, or illustrations for the visual communication of client-facing deliverables to support our narrative and analysis.
  • Quick ideation and prototyping with multidisciplinary teams
  • Staying updated on visual design trends, tools and techniques, and seeking opportunities to apply these on Gemic's works

Required skills, competencies, and experience
  • 3+ years of practical experience in your profession of choice
  • Formal education in a relevant field and a general knowledge of graphic design history and current landscape/trends
  • Strong proficiency in everyday creative tools or strong experience in handling cameras and other filmmaking gears.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, presentation and communication skills necessary to present your solutions and to build trust and respect within the team
  • Exceptional knowledge of the creative process and the ability to conduct brainstorming, prototyping and feedback sessions with interdisciplinary teams.
  • The ability to quickly and effectively communicate ideas through sketching, diagrams, or visual examples.
  • Excellent eye for detail, ambition for the quality of your work, and a constant search for excellence.
  • Being open to go beyond visual communication and helping teams in building narratives and structuring stories.
  • Being personable, open, engaging, and a good listener with the patience needed to allow for non-designers to understand design concepts
