Job Description Summary

Edits text and graphics for publication, including articles, manuscripts, reports, websites, journals, magazines, and brochures. Reads and evaluates reports and other materials to determine editorial problems, inconsistencies, and areas for improvement. Guides authors on treatment of material, reorganizes, cuts, or rewrites as needed, and ensures compliance with organizational and unit style, content, accessibility, and format standards. Works with editorial and production staff and contractors to guide manuscripts through to publication. May also contribute original material and write on topics for diverse audiences in multiple media formats.

Essential Job Duties
  • Edits reports, articles, and other publications, restructuring and rewriting as needed.
  • Marks up composition and ensures compliance with style, content, accessibility, and format standards.
  • Collaborates with designers, graphic artists, layout specialists, web developers, marketing, and production staff on all production aspects.
  • Negotiates revisions with authors and may network with prospective authors, scientific advisers, and news media.
  • Advises staff and authors on editing and publishing options.
  • Holds meetings to discuss current and future projects.
  • Answers editorial questions and consults with staff about progress of reports and publications.
  • May have supervisory responsibility for editorial assistants, including hiring, training, and evaluation.
  • Coordinates freelance activities in the unit, including finding and coordinating work among freelancers.
Job Specifications

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, including track changes and styles.
• Practical knowledge of WordPress or other content management systems, HTML, and CSS desired.
• Ability to solve complex problems, serve as a resource to others, and exercise independent judgment.
• Ability to work successfully in a team environment and develop relationships with colleagues.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or related field, or equivalent knowledge and experience.

Minimum Experience
Three years of related professional experience.

Physical Capabilities
Ability to work at a computer for extended periods.

Required Licenses, Certification or Registration
None.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls
Reports to Director or higher editorial position; may supervise junior staff.

Compensation & Benefits

Estimated compensation range: $73,760 - $92,190, based on relevant knowledge, skills, and experience. This is a benefits‑eligible position. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, life, disability, retirement, paid holidays, paid personal leave, transportation subsidies, and education assistance.

Work Environment

Hybrid Office/Telecommute: 60% onsite with occasional travel to National Academies facilities and off‑site meetings.
