Job description

AAAS has an exciting opportunity for a Part-Time Journalist Support Correspondent to join our SciLine team.
This part-time on-call position will fill in gaps in monitoring the SciLine inbox and corresponding with reporters seeking help via SciLine's expert matching service. They will report to SciLine's senior scientific outreach manager. Exact hours/shifts can be negotiated based on schedules and needs, up to 17 hours per week. This position may be especially attractive to freelance or part-time journalists seeking supplemental work while leaving space for continued reporting opportunities.

What You'll Do
  • During duty hours, monitor for and rapidly respond to incoming journalist inquiries via SciLine's expert matching service, in line with the service's scope, policies, and procedures.
  • Coordinate with scientist-facing members of the expert matching team to follow up on and resolve inquiries.
  • Enter data relevant to journalist inquiries into SciLine's salesforce database.
  • Communicate and coordinate with SciLine's inbox team to ensure smooth operation across different shifts throughout the day
  • Monitor for and raise questions about irregular or challenging journalist correspondence for other members of the expert matching team.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Some experience in journalism or media relations, or demonstrated familiarity with the lexicon and professional norms of the journalism industry;
  • Ability to communicate quickly, succinctly, and clearly;
  • Effective decision-making skills, especially on tight timelines;
  • Attention to detail;
  • Experience with, interest in, or enthusiasm about science, a major plus.

Location

The anticipated initial rate of compensation for this position is $30 per hour with a term length of: November 1, 2026 - May 31, 2028.
