What does a freelance Python GIS developer do?

A Freelance Python GIS Developer specializes in creating, maintaining, and optimizing applications or scripts that handle geographic information system (GIS) data using the Python programming language. They often work with spatial data, build custom GIS tools, automate data processing tasks, and integrate GIS functionalities into web or desktop applications. These professionals usually collaborate with clients on a project basis, offering expertise in libraries such as GeoPandas, Shapely, and ArcPy. Their work enables organizations to analyze and visualize spatial data effectively for decision-making and research.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance Python GIS developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Python GIS Developer, you need a solid understanding of Python programming, geospatial concepts, and experience with GIS platforms, often supported by a degree in computer science, geography, or a related field. Job description

Job Type
Full-time
Description
Fervo's mission is to use innovation in geoscience to accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy. The company has developed the world's most successful commercial enhanced geothermal system, completed in 2023, and has raised substantial capital from leading investors and public markets to build a multi-billion-dollar project pipeline delivering 24/7 carbon-free energy.
The GIS Developer will design, build, and maintain the geospatial applications, web tools, and mobile workforce solutions that power Fervo's field and office GIS workflows. This role focuses on the development side of Fervo's GIS program - building custom applications, configuring the Esri platform stack, and deploying mobile data collection tools that connect field crews to the office in real time.
The GIS Developer works closely with the GIS team, Engineering, Land, Operations, and Permitting to deliver intuitive, reliable geospatial tools across the organization.
Requirements
Responsibilities
GIS Application & Web Tool Development
  • Design and build custom GIS web applications using ArcGIS Experience Builder, ArcGIS Instant Apps, Web AppBuilder, and the Esri JavaScript API.
  • Develop and maintain ArcGIS dashboards, StoryMaps, and operational views for project teams, leadership reporting, and stakeholder communication.
  • Automate geospatial workflows and geoprocessing tasks using Python (ArcPy, arcgis module) and ModelBuilder.
  • Build and maintain hosted feature layers, map services, and web maps published through ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Enterprise/Portal.
  • Evaluate emerging Esri platform capabilities and recommend adoption of new tools aligned with Fervo's project needs.

Mobile Worker Applications & Field Technology
  • Deploy, configure, and administer Fervo's mobile workforce application suite including ArcGIS Field Maps, Survey123, Workforce for ArcGIS, and QuickCapture.
  • Design mobile data collection forms, intelligent map packages, and offline areas tailored to remote geothermal project site conditions.
  • Manage ArcGIS Mobile Worker licenses, user provisioning, device configurations, and application version control.
  • Collaborate with field operations, land, and permitting teams to identify workflow pain points and design mobile solutions that reduce data latency from field to office.
  • Provide training, documentation, and ongoing technical support to field users on mobile GIS applications.
  • Test and validate mobile workflows in offline and low-connectivity environments representative of Fervo's remote project sites.

Platform Configuration & Integration
  • Manage ArcGIS Online organizational settings, user roles, groups, licensing, and content governance in coordination with the GIS Data Manager.
  • Develop REST API integrations connecting the GIS platform to enterprise systems such as SharePoint, project management tools, and asset management databases.
  • Collaborate with the CAD Manager on data exchange workflows, ensuring CAD-derived geometry is correctly ingested and published as web-accessible GIS content.
  • Coordinate with the GIS Data Manager on published service schema, feature layer design, and data update automation.

User Support & Documentation
  • Develop user-facing documentation, training materials, and how-to guides for GIS applications and mobile tools.
  • Provide technical support and troubleshooting for GIS application and mobile tool users across Fervo's offices and field sites.
  • Participate in cross-functional project planning to align GIS application development with project timelines and deliverable needs.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in GIS, Geography, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field; or equivalent professional experience.
  • 3+ years of professional experience developing and deploying applications within the Esri platform (ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Enterprise, Experience Builder, Dashboard).
  • Demonstrated experience configuring and administering ArcGIS mobile applications (Field Maps, Survey123, Workforce for ArcGIS, or QuickCapture).
  • Proficiency in Python for GIS automation (ArcPy, arcgis Python API).
  • Working knowledge of REST APIs and web service integration patterns.
  • Strong understanding of GIS data formats, spatial projections, and coordinate systems relevant to Western U.S. project areas.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with ArcGIS Online administration including licensing management, organizational content governance, and role configuration.
  • Familiarity with Esri JavaScript API or similar web mapping frameworks a plus.
  • Background in energy, natural resources, environmental consulting, or land development preferred.
  • Experience designing GIS workflows for remote or offline field environments strongly preferred.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to translate technical application requirements for non-GIS users.
  • Self-starter with the ability to manage multiple development priorities independently in a fast-paced project environment.
