What does a freelance project manager do?

A Freelance Project Manager is an independent professional who oversees and coordinates projects for clients on a contract basis. Their responsibilities include planning project timelines, managing budgets and resources, communicating with stakeholders, and ensuring that project goals are met on time and within scope. Unlike in-house project managers, freelancers work with multiple clients and may handle projects across various industries. They offer flexibility and specialized expertise, making them valuable for organizations that need project support without hiring a full-time employee.

What does a freelance project manager do?

A freelance project manager provides independent management services for a client or organization on a contract basis. Project manager positions are available in many fields, including software development and construction. Specific responsibilities vary based on the type of services a client offers, but the main goal of any freelance project manager is to oversee the completion of a project. This often includes assembling a team, setting goals and deadlines, and communicating with management about progress.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Project Manager, you need strong project management skills, organizational abilities, and often a relevant degree or certification such as PMP or PRINCE2. Familiarity with tools like Asana, Trello, Microsoft Project, and virtual collaboration platforms is typically required. Excellent communication, adaptability, and self-motivation distinguish top performers in this independent role. These skills ensure projects are delivered on time and within scope while effectively managing client expectations and remote teams.

What are some common challenges freelance project managers face when coordinating remote teams, and how can they effectively address them?

Freelance Project Managers often work with distributed teams across different time zones, which can lead to communication delays and collaboration challenges. To address these issues, it's important to establish clear communication protocols, use project management tools to track progress, and schedule regular check-ins to ensure everyone is aligned. Building strong relationships and setting expectations early can also help foster accountability and trust within the team.

Senior Project Manager

On-Site Role

Compensation: $55-$79

ABOUT THE ROLE

Our Client is seeking a Senior Project Manager to lead complex, cross-functional initiatives and oversee the project management function within a creative agency environment. This dual-impact leadership role combines high-level strategic execution with operational oversight, managing high-visibility external partners and supervising, coaching, and elevating a team of Project Managers. You will be responsible for delivering your own portfolio of projects with excellence while acting as a function multiplier—raising performance, standards, and delivery consistency across the entire PM team. The Senior Project Manager is expected to drive process improvements, ensure delivery consistency, proactively mitigate risks, and foster a collaborative, detail-oriented culture. The ideal candidate is a proactive problem-solver with 5-10 years of creative agency project or account management experience, strong knowledge of project management tools, and a passion for elevating team performance.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Lead and deliver complex, cross-functional strategic initiatives from conception to successful execution
  • Manage and cultivate relationships with high-visibility external partners and workstreams, ensuring a seamless, premium, and consistent partner experience
  • Supervise, mentor, and coach a team of Project Managers to maximize professional growth, elevate performance, and ensure delivery consistency
  • Oversee risk mitigation and governance across multiple projects, proactively anticipating and addressing risks to ensure institutional alignment
  • Analyze workflows, introduce process improvements, and optimize project management methodologies to drive operational excellence
  • Coordinate capacity planning, resourcing, and project forecasting for the project management function
  • Maintain and update project documentation, decision logs, and workflow guidelines to ensure transparency and alignment
  • Onboard and manage freelance resources as needed, supporting flexible project delivery
  • Facilitate effective communication and collaboration across teams, leadership, and clients, eliminating ambiguity and ensuring clear messaging
  • Handle administrative tasks, including meeting coordination and operational support, to keep projects and teams running smoothly
WHAT YOU BRING
  • 5-10 years of project or account management experience in a creative agency environment
  • Proficiency with project management and workflow tools (e.g., Airtable preferred; Asana, Monday.com, Workfront, Smartsheet, etc.)
  • Strong understanding of capacity planning, resourcing, and project forecasting methodologies
  • Demonstrated ability to lead highly complex, cross-functional initiatives and manage high-visibility external partners
  • Experience mentoring, coaching, and supervising project management team members to maximize their growth and output
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to proactively navigate roadblocks and resolve issues
  • Outstanding communication and change management skills to ensure clear, consistent messaging across teams
  • High attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Experience onboarding and managing freelance resources to support project needs
  • Ability to maintain and update documentation, decision logs, and workflow guidelines for process transparency
  • Collaborative mindset with adaptability to reassess and refine processes as the agency evolves
  • Knowledge of creative production processes, including design, copywriting, and development
  • Curiosity and a drive to understand the "why" behind decisions, facilitating conversations and eliminating ambiguity
