What is a freelance program manager?

A Freelance Program Manager is an independent professional who oversees and coordinates multiple related projects for organizations on a contract basis. They are responsible for aligning project goals with business objectives, managing resources, timelines, and budgets, and ensuring successful program delivery. Unlike full-time employees, freelance program managers work with various clients, often remotely, and bring flexibility and specialized expertise to different industries and projects.

How does a freelance program manager typically coordinate with multiple clients and teams across different projects?

Freelance Program Managers often juggle several projects simultaneously, each with its own stakeholders and teams. Effective coordination relies on clear communication, strong time management, and the use of collaborative tools like project management software. Regular check-ins, transparent progress reporting, and setting expectations with clients are key to ensuring alignment and meeting objectives. Flexibility and adaptability are crucial, as freelance program managers must quickly adjust to varying work cultures and project requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance program manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Program Manager, you need strong project management, organizational, and leadership skills, typically supported by experience overseeing multiple projects and a relevant degree or certification such as PMP. Familiarity with project management tools like Asana, Trello, or Microsoft Project, as well as proficiency in budget tracking and reporting systems, is important. Excellent communication, adaptability, and problem-solving abilities help you build client trust and coordinate remote or cross-functional teams effectively. These competencies ensure successful program delivery, client satisfaction, and the ability to manage complex projects independently.

Key responsibilities

  • Own the content strategy, planning, and execution, including building and managing the B2B content marketing calendar.

  • Create and produce data-driven content such as articles, white papers, case studies, webinars, newsletters, and other marketing materials.

  • Monitor content performance metrics and adjust strategy and priorities based on results.

Job description

Who are we?
At Leadership Connect, we believe that relationships are everything in business and in life. Founded by two former CEOs of S&P 500 companies and a former presidential press secretary, our premier information service is built for developing relationships that impact decisions in government, business, and media. Utilizing deep research expertise and cutting-edge technology, we help our clients win business and influence policy across various specialties and verticals. We are a close-knit team dedicated to helping each of our users make a difference.

About the Role Leadership Connect is seeking a results-driven Content Marketing Manager to own content strategy, planning, and execution - building the B2B content marketing calendar and personally producing the content on it. Reporting to the VP of Marketing, you decide what we publish, when, and why - translating brand voice and marketing goals into a coherent plan, then planning, producing, and publishing against it. This is a hands-on individual contributor role with no direct reports: you are the primary creator, drawing on shared and contract resources (design, demand generation, agencies, freelancers) for added capacity and accountable for the output either way.
Core Functions of the Role:
  • Define the content strategy: choose the themes, formats, and cadence to achieve business goals.

  • Own the B2B content marketing calendar end-to-end, including prioritization, production, and publishing schedule.

  • Create data-driven content - expert articles, white papers, case studies, webinars, newsletters, government and policy updates, landing pages, emails, and product content.

  • Monitor content performance metrics and adjust strategy and priorities based on results.

  • Represent and refine the Leadership Connect brand voice across social platforms, co-marketing, and media relationships.

  • Personally execute content production, and coordinate shared or contract support (graphics, campaigns, freelance writers) where added capacity is needed to hit deadlines.

  • Apply SEO and agentic search best practices and tooling (e.g., Search Console, Ahrefs, Semrush).

About You:
  • Background in govtech, policy, government affairs, or public sector communications is a strong plus - this role produces government and policy-focused content.

  • Proven success defining and owning a B2B content marketing strategy and calendar - and personally writing and producing the content against it as an individual contributor.

  • Comfortable managing competing deadlines and shifting priorities.

  • Skillful with marketing tools including HubSpot, Agentforce Marketing, and WordPress.

  • Track record of using performance data to refine content strategy.

  • Eager to incorporate AI tools into content workflows to support drafting, research, and editing efficiency.
