What is a Freelance Production Designer?

A Freelance Production Designer is a creative professional who works on a project-by-project basis to design the visual elements of a production, such as films, television shows, commercials, or theater. They are responsible for establishing the visual concept and overseeing the creation of sets, locations, graphics, props, lighting, and costumes to ensure a cohesive look and feel. Unlike full-time production designers, freelancers are self-employed and often work with multiple clients or production companies. Their work is crucial for bringing the director's vision to life and ensuring the project’s aesthetic aligns with the intended mood and style.

How does a Freelance Production Designer typically collaborate with other creative professionals during a project?

As a Freelance Production Designer, collaboration is a central aspect of the role. You'll frequently work with art directors, set decorators, costume designers, and directors to ensure the visual elements of a production align with the overall creative vision. Communication skills are vital, as you'll participate in meetings, share design concepts, and adjust plans based on feedback. Flexibility and adaptability are important since each project may involve different teams and workflows, requiring you to quickly build rapport and integrate into new environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Freelance Production Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Production Designer, you need a solid background in visual design principles, set design, and production processes, often supported by a degree in design, fine arts, or a related field. Proficiency in design software like Adobe Creative Suite, SketchUp, and CAD tools is crucial, as are skills in budgeting and project management. Creativity, attention to detail, flexibility, and strong communication are standout soft skills that help manage client expectations and collaborate with diverse teams. These competencies are essential for delivering visually compelling environments on time and within budget, ensuring successful productions.

Job description

Instrument is a digitally native design and technology company built to help brands unlock their full potential. Since 2005, our team of makers, thinkers, and storytellers has partnered with leading brands like Google, Nike, Uber, ÅŒURA, and Eventbrite to craft digital experiences that create impact and drive results.
Unlike traditional agencies, we don't just design-we build. Our work lives at the intersection of taste and technology, powered by curiosity, thoughtful curation, and a commitment to delivering the most fitting solution for every brief. We bring this to life across three core offerings: Brand, Marketing, and Product.
As a member of our freelance network, you'll collaborate with our teams to bring bold ideas to life-whether launching new brands, building digital products, or shaping experiences that move people. We welcome collaborators from all backgrounds and experiences who share our curiosity, creativity, and care for craft.
We believe great work comes from diverse perspectives and shared purpose. If you're passionate about learning, experimenting, and making work that matters, we'd love to hear from you.
We're building our network of freelance Product Designers, Brand Designers, and Visual Designers who are interested in partnering with Instrument on future engagements.
Our work spans digital products, websites, brand experiences, campaigns, storytelling, and emerging digital platforms. As a result, we're looking for designers with a variety of backgrounds who are comfortable collaborating across disciplines and contributing at different stages of the design process.
While project needs vary, we're particularly interested in connecting with designers who are available to support opportunities in the near term.
What You Might Work On
  • Designing digital product experiences and marketing websites
  • Creating visual systems and brand expressions across digital touchpoints
  • Developing concepts, storyboards, and visual narratives
  • Partnering with Creative Directors, Design Directors, and cross-functional teams to bring ideas to life
  • Collaborating with motion designers, strategists, writers, and technologists
  • Building prototypes, motion studies, and presentation-ready design work
  • Extending and documenting design systems and component libraries

What We're Looking For
  • Experience designing digital products, websites, brands, or campaigns
  • Strong visual design, typography, and layout skills
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with distributed teams
  • Experience presenting work and incorporating feedback from stakeholders
  • Proficiency with Figma and modern design workflows
  • A portfolio demonstrating thoughtful craft and problem-solving
