What is a Freelance Production Designer?

A Freelance Production Designer is a creative professional who works on a project-by-project basis to design the visual elements of a production, such as films, television shows, commercials, or theater. They are responsible for establishing the visual concept and overseeing the creation of sets, locations, graphics, props, lighting, and costumes to ensure a cohesive look and feel. Unlike full-time production designers, freelancers are self-employed and often work with multiple clients or production companies. Their work is crucial for bringing the director's vision to life and ensuring the project’s aesthetic aligns with the intended mood and style.

How does a Freelance Production Designer typically collaborate with other creative professionals during a project?

As a Freelance Production Designer, collaboration is a central aspect of the role. You'll frequently work with art directors, set decorators, costume designers, and directors to ensure the visual elements of a production align with the overall creative vision. Communication skills are vital, as you'll participate in meetings, share design concepts, and adjust plans based on feedback. Flexibility and adaptability are important since each project may involve different teams and workflows, requiring you to quickly build rapport and integrate into new environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Freelance Production Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Production Designer, you need a solid background in visual design principles, set design, and production processes, often supported by a degree in design, fine arts, or a related field. Proficiency in design software like Adobe Creative Suite, SketchUp, and CAD tools is crucial, as are skills in budgeting and project management. Creativity, attention to detail, flexibility, and strong communication are standout soft skills that help manage client expectations and collaborate with diverse teams. These competencies are essential for delivering visually compelling environments on time and within budget, ensuring successful productions.

Job description

Position Overview

We are seeking a highly organized, detail-oriented Production Graphic Designer to support a portfolio of 15+ restaurant brands on a part-time basis. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working within established brand systems, managing multiple projects simultaneously, and executing a high volume of edits with precision and consistency.

Approximately 75% of this role involves production-based graphic design and document editing with little to no creative development required. The remaining time will be spent creating and updating marketing collateral in Canva and Adobe Creative Suite while adhering to existing brand standards and style guides.

The successful candidate is exceptionally meticulous, thrives in a fast-paced environment, and can independently manage numerous requests from multiple stakeholders without sacrificing quality or accuracy.

Responsibilities
  • Edit and maintain menus, promotional materials, signage, printed collateral, and digital assets for 15+ restaurant concepts.
  • Execute a high volume of revisions ranging from minor text updates to major document changes.
  • Ensure accuracy, consistency, and brand compliance across all materials.
  • Prepare print-ready files and maintain organized production workflows.
  • Update and create marketing assets in Canva using established templates and style guides.
  • Collaborate with marketing, operations, culinary, and restaurant teams to implement requested changes.
  • Manage multiple concurrent projects, deadlines, and stakeholder requests.
  • Maintain organized file structures and version control across numerous brands and assets.
  • Identify and correct errors before final production and distribution.
Qualifications
  • Proficiency in Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, and Canva.
  • Strong production design and document-editing experience.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Ability to manage large volumes of edits across multiple projects and brands.
  • Highly organized with excellent time management skills.
  • Comfortable working independently with minimal supervision.
  • Flexible and adaptable in a dynamic, deadline-driven environment.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Experience working with brand standards, templates, and style guides.
  • Restaurant, hospitality, food & beverage, or multi-location brand experience is a plus.
What We're Looking For

This role is best suited for someone who takes pride in flawless execution. While there are opportunities for creative work, success in this position depends on the ability to manage a high volume of detailed edits, maintain brand consistency, and deliver accurate work across many documents and brands. The ideal candidate enjoys bringing order to complexity, thrives on organization, and can confidently juggle competing priorities while maintaining a high standard of quality.
