What is freelance pharmaceutical writing?

Freelance pharmaceutical writing involves creating scientific and regulatory documents for pharmaceutical companies, healthcare organizations, or medical publishers on a contract basis. These writers produce materials such as clinical study reports, regulatory submissions, patient education brochures, and marketing content. Freelance pharmaceutical writers must have a strong understanding of medical terminology, drug development processes, and relevant guidelines. They often work remotely and collaborate with researchers, clinicians, and regulatory professionals to ensure accurate and compliant documentation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance pharmaceutical writer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Pharmaceutical Writer, you need a solid background in life sciences or pharmacy, excellent writing skills, and often an advanced degree such as a PhD or PharmD. Familiarity with referencing software, medical journal formats, and regulatory documentation systems like ICH guidelines is typically required. Attention to detail, strong research abilities, and the capacity to simplify complex scientific information are standout soft skills in this field. These competencies are crucial for producing accurate, compliant, and clear content that meets the precise standards of the pharmaceutical industry.

What is the difference between Freelance Pharmaceutical Writing vs Medical Copywriter?

AspectFreelance Pharmaceutical WritingMedical Copywriter
CredentialsPharmaceutical or life sciences background, writing experienceMedical or health sciences degree, writing skills
Work EnvironmentRemote, freelance projects for pharma companies, agenciesAgency or in-house, marketing and advertising focus
Employer & IndustryPharmaceutical firms, biotech, CROs, freelance clientsAdvertising agencies, healthcare marketing firms

Freelance Pharmaceutical Writers focus on creating scientific and regulatory content for pharma companies, often working independently. Medical Copywriters typically craft marketing and promotional content for healthcare products within agencies or in-house teams. While both roles require medical knowledge and writing skills, Freelance Pharmaceutical Writing emphasizes scientific accuracy and regulatory compliance, whereas Medical Copywriting leans toward marketing and persuasive communication.

What are some common challenges faced by freelance pharmaceutical writers, and how can they be managed?

Freelance pharmaceutical writers often encounter challenges such as tight deadlines, varying client expectations, and the need to quickly understand complex scientific information. Maintaining clear communication with clients, setting realistic timelines, and staying organized can help manage these issues. Additionally, staying up to date with industry guidelines and investing in continuous learning ensures high-quality work and professional credibility.

Job description

Company Description

Heartbeat is a full-service agency for healthcare Challenger Brands. Challengers are playing a high-stakes game-they must battle behemoth market leaders, upend ingrained treatment habits, or transform a "me-too" product into "yes-please."

The agency is known for serving up distinctive strategies and differentiating approaches, ensuring clients' market positions are uniquely owned. Heartbeat designs their organization around a 100% integration model, housing media, strategy, med comms, creative, technology, and even point of care/population health under the same roof for the tightest, most integrated campaigns possible. They price work based on outcomes, not outputs. Their innovative model delivers not only alignment, but powerful orchestration, greater efficiency, and maximum impact for every dollar spent-all the necessary elements for Challengers to triumph.

That's the philosophy, here's the creds: 250+ employees between NYC & LA; 6 agency leaders with decades of tenure; a pile of awards from the likes of the Mannys, MM&M Awards, OMMAs, and Clios; an industry-leading commitment to diversity and inclusion (with a Med Ad News D&I Champion nod to match); and a President who dared to be quoted as saying, "We celebrate people who stand up and say, 'You know what? This is dumb.' Damn straight.
