Job description

The Skirball Cultural Center seeks a diligent and proactive Risk Manager - Operations, Property and Casualty to join our Finance team. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Risk Manager will oversee the organization's risk management activities, with a primary focus on managing insurance programs and coordinating responses to incidents involving visitors, vendors, and other stakeholders. This role requires close collaboration with insurance brokers, legal counsel, operations staff, and other departments to ensure Skirball's risk exposures are effectively mitigated and managed.

Starting Pay: $90,000$105,000/year

Responsibilities

Insurance Management

  • Coordinate annual insurance policy renewals, including gathering data, completing applications, and working with brokers to obtain competitive coverage terms and pricing. This includes developing scenario analysis for cost competitiveness/effectiveness and as new conditions require.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all insurance policies, certificates of insurance, endorsements, and related documents.
  • Managing carrier invoices, working with AP to ensure timely payments, track cashflow and expense allocation working with Accounting to periodically reconcile prepaid insurance balances.
  • Responsible for budgeting all lines during annual budget process and coordinate with broker to determine and document assumptions.
  • Evaluate and recommend appropriate coverage types and limits based on organizational activities and exposures.

Claims Management

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for processing insurance claims, including property, general liability, workers' compensation, auto, financial products like D&O, employment practices liability, fiduciary liability, cyber and specialty coverages.
  • Investigate and document incidents and claims, gathering statements, photographs, and other evidence as needed collaborating with security, operations, HR and other departments when necessary to gather timely and accurate information.
  • Work closely with brokers, adjusters, legal counsel, and internal staff to facilitate claims resolution and minimize financial impact.
  • Maintain detailed claim files and generate regular reports on claim status and trends and report those findings to Ops to address safety concerns and be proactive in prevention and minimizing exposures.

Incident Response and Reporting

  • Oversee response protocols for visitor, vendor, or staff injuries and complaints, ensuring timely and professional handling of incidents.
  • Document all incidents thoroughly and prepare incident reports for internal records and insurance purposes.
  • Advise staff on risk and safety measures to prevent future incidents.
  • Provide leadership regular updates to key claims, their status and other essential information.

Risk Assessment and Mitigation

  • Collaborate with departments across the Skirball to identify operational, legal, and financial risks.
  • Develop and implement risk mitigation strategies and policies in alignment with organizational goals.
  • Provide training or guidance to staff on risk awareness and safety practices.
  • Partner with brokers and underwriters to conduct site surveys frequently and implement their recommendations.

Compliance and Recordkeeping

  • Ensure compliance with all insurance-related regulatory requirements and reporting obligations.
  • Maintain risk management records and reports for audit and legal purposes.
  • Assist the CFO and leadership team with special projects and other duties as assigned.
  • Facilitate the required information for audits in general liability and workers' compensation and ensure timely process of results.

Qualifications, Experience, and Attributes:

  • Bachelor's degree in Risk Management, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field or equivalent training and experience required.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of professional experience in risk management, insurance coordination, claims handling, or a related field; experience in a nonprofit or cultural institution preferred. Fine Arts placement experience desired.
  • Strong knowledge of insurance principles, policy types, and claims processes.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to handle multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills for working effectively with diverse internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with risk management or claims management systems a plus.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and integrity.
  • Demonstrated commitment and enthusiasm for the Skirball's mission and values.
