Exhibit Design Technologist 

Marbles Kids Museum is a vibrant, nonprofit children’s museum and IMAX Theatre located in the heart of downtown Raleigh. Marbles has been sparking imagination, discovery, and learning through play since opening its doors in 2007. Marbles’ serves a diverse population of families, school groups, and community organizations through award-winning play-based exhibits, summer camps, IMAX documentaries, feature movies, and special events year-round. Today Marbles ranks among the top family destinations in North Carolina providing learning experiences for children with creative programs, and larger-than-life movies. 
The Opportunity 
Marbles is seeking an Exhibit Design Technologist to help bring imagination to life! This role is responsible for designing, fabricating, and maintaining exhibits with a focus on creative interactive technology, and assisting with museum projects and events across teams. If you're passionate about innovation, teamwork, and creating unforgettable moments through play, this is the role for you!
Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Invent, design, fabricate, and maintain original interactive exhibits including but not limited to those integrating microcontrollers, sensors, motors, video, and/or sound.
  • Serve a critical role in the design, fabrication, and installation of new exhibit componentry.
    • Brainstorm creative solutions to play objectives.
    • Create ideation sketches to communicate new exhibit ideas to internal stakeholders.
    • Design reliable and intuitive yet new and original systems that fulfill play objectives.
    • Prototype designs to confirm functionality, safety, and durability.
    • Source and procure materials and parts for exhibit fabrication and installation
  • Conduct daily maintenance rounds of exhibit areas and components, ensuring that they meet superior standards for guest play experiences.
  • Clean and perform basic preventative maintenance routines in the exhibit production shop.
  • Support Team Marbles with a wide variety of design, fabrication, and maintenance tasks ensuring excellent guest and team experience.
  • Perform all other duties assigned by the manager.
Ideal Experience and Skills
  • Proficient in the creation of 2D renderings and 3D CAD models from those renderings.
  • Basic proficiency writing in CircuitPython and/or C++/Arduino frameworks.
  • Ability to create sound mixes and video productions suitable for exhibits.
  • Ability to safely operate common machines and hand tools to form and finish metal, plastics, wood, and other diverse materials.
  • Basic understanding of CNC machining practices and procedures.
  • Ability to operate scissor lifts and other exhibit moving equipment.
  • Basic computer administration and audio-visual systems experience.
  • Capable of designing, building, and debugging DC power and logic circuits issues using a multimeter, oscilloscope, or logic analyzer.
  • General working knowledge of electrical, plumbing, pneumatic, and mechanical components.
  • Experience with coordination of multiple projects and tasks simultaneously to meet predetermined deadlines.
  • Good creative problem solving, organization, and interpersonal skills.
  • A post-secondary degree in industrial design or related field or a combination of education and experience preferred.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Proven desire to learn, take on unfamiliar challenges, and achieve stretch goals.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail.
Physical Demands 
  • Walking, standing, stooping, bending.
  • Occasionally using a ladder and going up and down stairs.
  • Carrying up to 40 lbs.
Work Environment
  • 95% indoors
Schedule
  • Must be available to work a Tuesday-Saturday schedule.
