Freelance Mechanical Engineering Internships information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Freelance Mechanical Engineering Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Mechanical Engineering Intern, you generally need a solid understanding of mechanical engineering principles, current enrollment in or recent graduation from an engineering program, and foundational experience with design and analysis. Familiarity with CAD software (like SolidWorks or AutoCAD), simulation tools (such as ANSYS), and basic project management platforms is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, effective communication, and adaptability set outstanding interns apart in freelance environments. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering quality work independently, meeting client expectations, and adapting quickly to diverse project requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by freelance mechanical engineering interns, and how can they be addressed?

Freelance mechanical engineering interns often encounter challenges such as managing multiple projects for different clients, adapting quickly to new technical requirements, and ensuring clear communication across remote teams. To address these, it’s important to develop strong organizational skills, set clear expectations with clients, and use collaborative tools for effective workflow and file sharing. Seeking regular feedback and staying proactive in learning new software or industry standards can also help interns stand out and deliver consistent results.

What are freelance mechanical engineering internships?

Freelance mechanical engineering internships are short-term, project-based roles that allow students or recent graduates in mechanical engineering to gain practical experience while working independently for different clients or companies. Unlike traditional internships, these roles are often remote or flexible and focus on specific projects, such as CAD modeling, prototyping, or engineering analysis. Freelance internships help interns build a portfolio, expand their professional network, and develop real-world skills in a flexible setting.

Can you make $250,000 as an engineer?

Freelance mechanical engineering internships typically do not pay $250,000, as internships are entry-level positions with lower compensation. Experienced mechanical engineers in senior roles or specialized fields can earn that level of income, especially with advanced skills, certifications, and in high-demand industries. Income varies based on experience, location, and project scope.

Term: Summer 2026 (May-August)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Process QSM tasks by researching intent and requirements related to documentation changes and implementing them in SolidWorks models and drawings as approved by the Change Team.

  • Update CAD models and drawings for new machine construction based on feedback from Assembly, as approved by Product Development Engineering.

  • Assist machine designers by conducting purchased-part research, performing light design tasks, and organizing documentation.

  • Create detailed and assembly drawings of new SolidWorks models.

  • Participate in design reviews and project meetings to contribute ideas and feedback.

  • Assist in setting up product configurators for standardized designs.

  • Review and organize product documentation, ensuring that any residual changes are processed effectively.

  • Gather legacy drawings, convert them to PDF, and upload them to a shared web platform.

  • Prepare and present to management a summary of the experience gained during the internship.

  • Apply scientific methods and Lean principles to proactively identify and suggest improvements to manufacturing systems.

  • Identify equipment needs and process specifications; lead the implementation of these requirements into the production environment.

  • Act as a technical liaison between operations and design engineering to facilitate smooth communication.

  • Support the culture of continuous improvement through the Lean journey, assisting in the development and coaching of associates on Lean philosophies.

Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of college coursework completed in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.

  • Experience with CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) is preferred.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and design skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment and communicate effectively.
