The GVN is essential and critical in the preparedness, defense, and first research response to emerging, existing, and unidentified viruses that pose a clear and present threat to public health. Working in close coordination with established national and international institutions, the GVN is a coalition comprised of eminent human and animal virologists from 90+ Centers of Excellence and Affiliates in 40+ countries, working collaboratively to train the next generation, advance knowledge about how to identify and diagnose pandemic viruses, mitigate and control how such viruses spread and make us sick, as well as develop drugs, vaccines, and treatments to combat them. No single institution in the world has expertise in all viral areas other than the GVN, which brings together the finest medical virologists to leverage their individual expertise and coalesce global teams of specialists on the scientific challenges, issues, and problems posed by pandemic viruses. Who You Are

The Global Virus Network (GVN) is seeking a freelance Medical/Grant Writer to provide medical writing, scientific communications, and grant development support. This consultant will support the preparation of high-quality scientific, programmatic, and funding-related materials that align with GVN's mission, programs, and strategic priorities. The ideal candidate will have strong scientific writing skills, experience with grant development, and the ability to translate complex scientific and public health information into clear, accurate, and professional documents.

What You'll Do

Scope of Work: The Consultant may provide services including, but not limited to:

  • Identify and monitor potential grant and funding opportunities aligned with GVN's mission, programs, and strategic priorities.
  • Support the preparation, drafting, editing, and submission of grant proposals, letters of intent, reports, and related funding materials.
  • Provide medical and scientific writing support for manuscripts, white papers, concept notes, briefing documents, presentations, and other organizational materials.
  • Conduct literature reviews, background research, data compilation, and scientific content development in support of GVN initiatives and programs.
  • Collaborate with GVN leadership, staff, external partners, and subject matter experts to gather information and ensure accuracy and consistency of content.
  • Perform editing, formatting, proofreading, and quality review of scientific and medical documents to ensure professional and publication-ready standards.

Deliverables

  • The Consultant will produce, with GVN staff, approximately 4 major proposals/year.
  • The Consultant will produce high quality products with excellent prospects for success, and meeting timelines. Likely sources include: NIH, CDC, state health departments, Foundations (Gates, Wellcome, etc.), and multilateral agencies.
  • Prospecting for grant opportunities (based on GVN priorities and strategies) and concept/ proposal development are primary responsibilities. Scientific writing is the secondary task.
What You Bring
  • Advanced degree in public health, biomedical sciences, life sciences, medicine, or a related field preferred. Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with scientific and administrative teams. Excellent writing, editing, research, and organizational skills, with strong attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Experience preparing grant proposals, reports, manuscripts, concept notes, or scientific briefing materials. Submission of relevant writing samples is required as part of the application process. Samples may include grant proposals, manuscripts, scientific reports, white papers, concept notes, or other medical/scientific writing materials.
  • Strong understanding of infectious diseases, virology, public health, or global health preferred.
  • Budgeting expertise is an advantage, but not mandatory. Expected availability is 15 hours per week, with episodic surges or diminution, depending on grant cycles. Applicants with 10+ years of grant writing experience are preferred.
