Description Join the Chatham County Public Defender's Office as a Legal Secretary II and put your legal administrative expertise to work supporting trial teams and serving clients. This position is ideal for an organized, detail-oriented professional with strong communication skills, sound judgment, and the ability to handle confidential and sensitive matters with discretion in a fast-paced environment.

Examples of Duties Perform administrative and legal secretarial support functions for multiple trial teams. Utilize excellent oral and written communication and organizational skills as you help with walk-in applications for the office, generate and track medical records requests for all teams within the office, and assist with social worker assignments. Provide back-up assistance for the indigency verification admin by processing daily applications over the phone with clients currently incarcerated.

Perform work that requires comprehensive knowledge of all functions and activities of the office environment. Perform duties that require considerable initiative, independent judgment, discretion, and confidentiality, often in stressful situations. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or GED, and At least two (2) years of experience performing various legal administrative assistance, legal secretarial, or related duties; or Any equivalent combination of training and experience. You must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office programs. Must be able to type a minimum of 25 words per minute.

Clerical testing will be conducted during the interview process for selected candidates. Preferred Qualifications: Legal and/or court experience. Post-secondary education in a legal field.

During emergencies and disasters affecting Chatham County, you may be required to report to work as part of a disaster operations team. In accordance with the Department of Transportation, Commercial Driver's License (CDL) holders and those employed in safety-sensitive positions are subject to random drug testing. Candidates with direct and relevant experience may receive an offer of up to 10% above the minimum salary that is posted, reflecting their exceptional qualifications.
