Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Test Lab Manager, the engineer is responsible for analyzing test requests, specifications, related data, and drawings to determine the testing parameters, equipment, and detailed procedures necessary to perform required dynamic and static testing, as well as certification of vehicles, trailers, and components. The engineer will set up and perform these tests, then interpret and analyze test data to prepare detailed test reports. This includes designing/fabricating custom fixtures, set up/calibration of instrumentation, data analysis and technical report writing. Testing requires operation of equipment to perform tests such as tension/compression machines, salt spray, environmental chamber, UV cabinet, and hydraulic/pneumatic equipment with load cells amongst others. Use of CMM, 3D scanning, micrometers, calipers, gages, and other mechanical, electrical, and electronic test gear is also expected of the engineer.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret/analyze test requests, and prepare test procedures based on ASTM/SAE test standards

  • Interpret/analyze test data to prepare detailed test reports.

  • Perform instrumented tests on parts and sub-assemblies for product evaluations, certifications, monthly/yearly verifications, etc.

  • Perform un-instrumented tests for subjective evaluation reports.

  • Create automated test programs using basic programmable logic through a DAQ software (DEWESoft preferred)

  • Program and perform tensile/compression testing using an Instron Universal Testing System.

  • Perform static weight studies and analysis on pass cars, trucks, and trailers.

  • Installation, operation, calibration, and troubleshooting of sophisticated electronic instrumentation for various lab tests

  • Set up and operation of electronically controlled hydraulic and pneumatic test fixtures.

  • Use Autodesk Inventor to design and create 3D models, assemblies, and drawings of test fixtures and 3D scan data

  • Use 3D scanning for precise measurements and reverse engineering components

  • Perform vehicle dynamic handling tests

  • Project set up and operation of OBDII, GPS, and Mapping software

  • Work with the other test engineers, design engineers, and technicians to grow your understanding of the product and achieve desired test results.

Experience:

  • Working experience with the operation of data acquisition systems such as Vishay, DEWESoft, or LabVIEW. DEWESoft specific experience is a plus.

  • Must be competent in instrumentation technology, analysis and technical report writing.

  • Working knowledge of SAE and ASTM, standards, test methods, and recommended practices.

  • Test driving experience is a plus. Light truck and trailer combination highly desirable with capability of performing complex vehicle dynamics testing. This includes repetitively and uniformly performing steering, braking, acceleration, durability, and fuel economy test schedules.

  • Understanding of basic circuitry and/or automotive electronics.

  • Experience using fabrication equipment such as mill drills, band saws, sheet metal shear, welders, and various power tools is a plus

  • 3D modelling using CAD software such as Inventor, Solidworks, Creo Parametric etc.

  • 3D printing knowledge

  • Proficient in Word and Excel and able to perform complex calculations and data analysis.

Education / Training:

BSEE, BSME or equivalent required with 3+ years of experience in an engineering or test environment.
