What is a Freelance Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) Welder?

A Freelance Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) Welder is a skilled tradesperson who travels to remote work sites, often in mining, oil and gas, or construction industries, to perform welding jobs on a contract or freelance basis. Instead of relocating permanently, FIFO welders are flown in for set periods (rosters or shifts), then flown back home during breaks. This arrangement allows companies to access specialized welding skills for short-term projects while providing welders with flexibility and potentially higher pay. Freelance FIFO welders must be adaptable and capable of working in challenging, remote environments.

What are some typical challenges faced by freelance Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) welders, and how can they be managed?

Freelance FIFO welders often encounter challenges such as irregular work schedules, extended time away from home, and adapting quickly to new team environments at various sites. Managing these challenges involves strong organizational skills, effective communication with both onsite teams and family, and maintaining a high level of adaptability. Building a reliable network of industry contacts and staying up to date with certifications can also help secure consistent contracts and smooth transitions between projects.

Wentz Orthodontics โ€“ Fairbanks and North Pole, Alaska

Are you an orthodontist looking for an opportunity with strong clinical support, efficient systems, and the flexibility of a fly-in/fly-out schedule? Wentz Orthodontics is excited to welcome an associate orthodontist to join our patient centered practice โ€“ ideal for a clinician who values high quality care, teamwork, and balance.

At Wentz Orthodontics, our mission is to create confident, healthy smiles while delivering an exceptional patient experience. For over 30 years, we've served the Fairbanks and North Pole communities under the leadership of Dr. Todd Wentz, who brings more than three decades of orthodontic experience.

We are proud of our welcoming culture, highly trained team, and commitment to clinical excellence. Our practice is built on long-term relationships, strong referrals, and efficient systems that allow doctors to focus on what matters most โ€“ delivering exceptional care to every patient. Our role offers full-time hours or the flexibility to fly-in and fly-out for 1-2 weeks per month, which may be ideal for someone who wants to prioritize work life balance without sacrificing compensation.

Why Fairbanks, Alaska?

Located in the heart of Interior Alaska, Fairbanks offers a truly unique blend of career opportunity, lifestyle flexibility, and natural beauty. Here's why you'll love working here:

  • Fly-In, Fly-Out Flexibility โ€“ Prefer to live elsewhere? Fairbanks is well-suited for a fly-in/fly-out schedule, giving you the ability to maximize earning potential in a high-demand market while maintaining your home base.
  • One-of-a-Kind Natural Experiences โ€“ Witness the Northern Lights in winter and the midnight sun in summer โ€“ experiences you simply won't find anywhere else.

  • Tight-Knit, Welcoming Community โ€“ Build meaningful relationships in a community that values connection, trust, and long-term care. Patients here are loyal, appreciative, and engaged.
  • High Demand, Meaningful Impact โ€“ As a regional hub, Fairbanks offers access to a broad patient base with strong demand for orthodontic care, allowing you to make a real difference while growing your career.
  • Space, Balance & Quality of Life โ€“ Enjoy a slower pace, less congestion, and the kind of balance that's hard to find in larger urban centers.
About the Role:

As an associate orthodontist, you will be a key member of the practice, contributing to both clinical excellence and overall patient experience. You will work with Dr. Todd Wentz, a long-time Alaska resident and well-known orthodontist in the community, supported by a high-performing and well-established team.

In this role, you will lead treatment planning and care while delivering an exceptional patient experience rooted in trust. You will play an important role in educating patients on the value of orthodontic treatment, helping guide them through their care journey and supporting case acceptance.

What we offer through Corus Orthodontists Doctor Excellence Program:

  • Mentorship That Matters โ€“ Work closely alongside Dr. Todd Wentz and receive personalized coaching from other top Corus doctors in clinical care, leadership, and business.
