How much do freelance flight dynamics engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 8, 2026, the average yearly pay for freelance flight dynamics engineer in the United States is $118,512.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $95,000.00 and $115,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior aerospace or flight dynamics engineers with extensive experience, advanced degrees, and specialized skills in simulation, modeling, and analysis can earn $300,000 or more annually, especially in senior or leadership roles within the aerospace industry. High compensation often correlates with working for major aerospace companies, government agencies, or consulting firms, and may include bonuses and stock options.

Are flight engineers in demand?

Flight engineers are in moderate demand, primarily in the commercial and military aviation sectors, where their expertise in aircraft systems and safety is essential. However, the role has declined with the automation of aircraft systems, and many airlines are reducing or eliminating the position, making it a specialized and less widely available career path.

Can I make 200k as an aerospace engineer?

As a freelance flight dynamics engineer, earning $200,000 annually is possible with extensive experience, specialized skills, and a strong portfolio, especially in high-demand projects or consulting roles. However, typical salaries for aerospace engineers vary widely based on location, employer, and level of expertise, with many earning between $80,000 and $150,000 per year. Freelance professionals often supplement income through multiple contracts or niche expertise, but reaching a $200,000 income level generally requires advanced skills and a solid reputation in the industry.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior aerospace or flight dynamics engineers with extensive experience, advanced skills in simulation and modeling, and working in high-paying industries such as defense or private aerospace companies can earn $500,000 or more annually. Achieving this level often requires specialized certifications, leadership roles, and working in high-cost-of-living regions or for companies with lucrative contracts.

What is the difference between Freelance Flight Dynamics Engineer vs Aerospace Systems Engineer?

AspectFreelance Flight Dynamics EngineerAerospace Systems Engineer
CredentialsEngineering degree, specialized in flight dynamics, often with certifications in aerospaceEngineering degree, broad aerospace or systems engineering certifications
Work EnvironmentIndependent or contract-based, project-specific, often remote or client-siteTypically employed by aerospace companies, government agencies, or large firms
Industry UsageUsed in consulting, research, and specialized project work in aerospaceInvolved in designing, integrating, and managing aerospace systems

While both roles require aerospace engineering knowledge, Freelance Flight Dynamics Engineers focus on analyzing and modeling flight behavior on a contract basis, whereas Aerospace Systems Engineers work on the overall design and integration of aerospace systems within organizations.

The Company
Our client is a fast-growing commercial space startup providing comprehensive services, from launch to in-orbit operations. They have a proven track record of successful launch vehicles and spacecraft and are actively developing their next-generation technologies to support government and commercial missions, from low Earth orbit to the Moon and beyond.
The Job
As a Flight Dynamics Engineer, you'll apply your expertise in astrodynamics, orbit determination, and trajectory optimization to drive the success of groundbreaking space missions. In this dynamic role, you'll take the lead in designing cutting-edge software tools and innovative procedures that power the operation of both Earth-orbiting and interplanetary spacecraft. Collaborating with a tight-knit, high-energy team, you'll have the opportunity to shape mission outcomes and communicate vital mission analysis to diverse groups of stakeholders, all while making a real impact in the fast-paced world of space exploration.
Functions
  • Use ranging techniques to perform orbit determination of spacecraft
  • Design, analyze, and execute orbital maneuvers for spacecraft
  • Advance the state-of-the-art in-house tools and software for trajectory design, maneuver planning, and orbit determination
  • Define, develop, and maintain the interfaces between a flight dynamics system and other components of ground-based operations, as well as external data providers
  • Utilize Monte Carlo techniques for maneuver-planning and trajectory analysis
  • Cross-train other team members in the use of operational software and procedures
  • Perform occasional shift work and on-call support for launch and early orbit phase operations or collision avoidance maneuver planning

Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's degree in engineering or physics and 5+ years of relevant work experience
  • An advanced understanding of orbital mechanics
