What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Freelance Feature Writer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Feature Writer, you need strong research abilities, excellent storytelling skills, and proficiency in grammar and AP or other relevant style guides, often supported by a portfolio of published work. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), SEO tools, and digital publishing platforms is typically required. Creativity, persistence, and the ability to communicate professionally with editors and sources are key soft skills that set successful writers apart. These skills ensure the production of engaging, accurate, and marketable content that meets editorial standards and deadlines.

What is freelance feature writing?

Freelance feature writing involves independently creating in-depth, narrative-driven articles for magazines, newspapers, websites, or other publications. Unlike news articles, features usually explore topics in detail, often focusing on human interest, trends, or investigative stories. Freelance feature writers pitch their ideas to editors, conduct research and interviews, and are paid per piece rather than being on staff. This career offers flexibility and variety but requires strong writing skills, self-motivation, and the ability to meet deadlines.

What is the difference between Freelance Feature Writing vs Freelance News Writing?

AspectFreelance Feature WritingFreelance News Writing
CredentialsStrong writing portfolio, storytelling skillsStrong reporting skills, accuracy, and timeliness
Work EnvironmentCreative, in-depth research, flexible deadlinesFast-paced, deadline-driven, often on tight schedules
Employer & IndustryMagazines, online publications, blogsNews outlets, newspapers, online news platforms

Freelance Feature Writing involves creating in-depth, engaging stories with a focus on storytelling and detailed research, often for magazines or online publications. Freelance News Writing emphasizes timely, accurate reporting of current events, typically for news outlets or newspapers. Both roles require strong writing skills, but differ in style, pace, and purpose.

What are some common challenges freelance feature writers face when working with multiple editors or publications?

Freelance feature writers often juggle assignments from various editors, each with their own style, expectations, and editorial processes. This can lead to challenges such as adapting to different voice and tone guidelines, managing overlapping deadlines, and negotiating contracts or payment terms. Building strong communication skills and maintaining organized tracking systems for pitches, drafts, and payments can help writers navigate these complexities and foster positive relationships with multiple clients.

Job description

Since 1957, GQ has inspired its readers with unparalleled coverage of style, fashion, culture, news, politics, and more. From award-winning journalism and feature writing to unforgettable photography, videos and live events, GQ creates cultural conversations around the world.
Job Description
Location:
New York, NY
Senior Culture Editor, GQ US
Location: New York, NY
Company: Condé Nast
Overview
GQ is a global authority on style, culture, and modern masculinity, reaching millions of readers across print, digital, video, social, and emerging platforms. As part of Condé Nast's global network, GQ covers culture through a distinctive lens-one that blends authority, curiosity, style, wit, and a deep understanding of the conversations shaping modern life.
GQ is seeking a Senior Culture Editor to lead the entertainment-focused vertical of GQ.com, overseeing ambitious, fast-moving coverage of film, television, music, podcasts, YouTube, streaming culture, sportxs, internet creators, and the broader entertainment ecosystem that captures the attention of GQ's audience. In owning both daily coverage and ambitious projects, profiles, and projects across multiple platforms, this role will drive cultural conversation...and maybe start a few (good-natured) arguments in the process.
The ideal candidate is an experienced editor with exceptional editorial instincts, strong news judgment, and a sophisticated understanding of entertainment, sports, and pop culture. They should be equally comfortable driving daily coverage, developing long-term editorial franchises, editing sharply-conceived features and celebrity profiles, and helping shape ambitious multi-platform storytelling across web, print, newsletter, social, and video. They'll get as excited by a best-of (or worst-of) list as by a flawlessly executed celebrity profile. They'll develop new writers and voices, and work closely with colleagues across the brand to make GQ's entertainment coverage unmissable. And they bring a vision for how to make that happen.
This role reports directly to the Executive Editor.
Primary Responsibilities
Entertainment Vertical Leadership
  • Lead and oversee GQ's entertainment-focused vertical on GQ.com, shaping editorial priorities, coverage strategy, and daily programming
  • Direct coverage spanning film, television, music, podcasts, YouTube, streaming culture, digital creators, sports, and emerging entertainment platforms
  • Own day-to-day editorial programming, balancing timely news and conversation-driven coverage with ambitious features and enterprise reporting
  • Deliver stories and coverage that resonate with and expand GQ's broad audience-including digital subscribers
  • Identify and lead coverage of the biggest entertainment and cultural stories of the moment with a mix of voice, authority, thoughtfulness, and originality
  • Develop recurring editorial franchises, packages, and content initiatives that strengthen GQ's entertainment identity across platforms
  • Coordinate editorial coverage for major tentpole moments, including awards seasons, premieres, festivals, album launches, major releases, and other notable cultural events
  • Help shape the tone, cadence, and editorial voice of entertainment coverage across the brand
  • Work closely with GQ's features team to assign, edit, and manage major profiles, features, interviews, and enterprise stories online and periodically in print
  • Collaborate with staff writers, editors, freelancers, and contributors to develop distinctive reporting and storytelling
  • Cultivate relationships with publicists, studios, labels, streamers, talent representatives, creators, and entertainment industry sources
  • Identify opportunities for ambitious access-driven journalism and exclusive storytelling
  • Contribute to GQ's entertainment coverage across all platforms, including web, print, newsletter, social, and video
  • Collaborate closely with audience development, social, video, and creative teams to maximize the reach and impact of entertainment coverage
  • Participate in developing entertainment-focused video, social storytelling, live events, newsletters, and multimedia editorial franchises
  • Help translate major editorial stories and celebrity moments into cross-platform programming opportunities
  • Manage editorial budgets related to entertainment coverage, freelance commissioning, and tentpole programming
  • Oversee freelance assignments and contributor relationships within the vertical
  • Maintain strong editorial judgment, accuracy, and reporting standards across all coverage
  • Foster a collaborative editorial environment while mentoring writers and editors where appropriate
Qualifications
  • 7+ years of editorial experience covering entertainment, culture, media, or celebrity journalism
  • Strong experience managing digital editorial programming and fast-paced cultural coverage
  • Excellent editing skills with experience shaping features, profiles, criticism, and conversation-driven journalism
  • Deep understanding of the entertainment industry and contemporary pop culture landscape
  • Strong news judgment and the ability to identify stories that will resonate with a broad, digitally engaged audience
  • Experience developing editorial franchises, programming strategies, and cross-platform storytelling initiatives
  • Familiarity with audience development, social media ecosystems, newsletters, and digital publishing trends
  • Strong organizational and communication skills with the ability to manage multiple editorial priorities simultaneously
