What does a freelance electrical transformer design engineer do?

A Freelance Electrical Transformer Design Engineer specializes in designing and developing electrical transformers for various applications, such as power distribution, industrial machinery, or renewable energy systems. They work independently or on a contract basis, collaborating with clients to understand requirements, create detailed schematics, select appropriate materials, and ensure compliance with industry standards. Their work often includes performing calculations, simulations, and testing to ensure transformer efficiency, safety, and reliability. Freelancers in this role may also assist with troubleshooting, prototyping, and providing technical documentation for manufacturing and installation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance electrical transformer design engineer?

A Freelance Electrical Transformer Design Engineer needs a solid background in electrical engineering principles, transformer design, and relevant industry standards, often supported by a bachelor's or master's degree in electrical engineering. Proficiency with CAD software (such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks), simulation tools (like ANSYS or PSCAD), and knowledge of IEC or IEEE standards are essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help manage client expectations and project deliverables. These competencies ensure the engineer can deliver safe, efficient, and reliable transformer designs that meet client specifications and regulatory requirements.

What are some common challenges freelance electrical transformer design engineers face when working with clients remotely?

Freelance Electrical Transformer Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as aligning technical specifications with diverse client requirements, managing project timelines across different time zones, and ensuring clear communication despite not being onsite. Additionally, they may need to proactively address issues related to data security when sharing sensitive design files and coordinate closely with manufacturing teams to ensure that custom designs are feasible and compliant with industry standards. Building trust and maintaining transparency with clients remotely is essential for successful project delivery.

What is the difference between Freelance Electrical Transformer Design Engineer vs Electrical Power Engineer?

AspectFreelance Electrical Transformer Design EngineerElectrical Power Engineer
CredentialsRelevant electrical engineering degree, certifications in transformer designElectrical engineering degree, power systems certifications
Work EnvironmentIndependent, project-based, often remoteTypically employed by utilities or power companies, on-site or office-based
Industry UsageDesigning transformers for various clients and projectsManaging power systems, grid operations, and infrastructure
Search & Comparison IntentFocus on design, freelance opportunities, specialized skillsPower systems, grid management, industry regulations

The main difference is that Freelance Electrical Transformer Design Engineers focus on designing transformers independently for clients, often working remotely, while Electrical Power Engineers work within the power industry managing electrical systems and grid operations. Both roles require electrical engineering credentials, but their work environments and project scopes differ significantly.

With $8.1 billion in revenue for 2025, Clayco specializes in the "art and science of building," providing fast track, efficient solutions for mission critical, industrial, life sciences, power & energy, aviation, commercial, institutional, residential and sports & entertainment related building projects.

About LJC

LJC Design & Engineering is a full-service architecture, engineering, and design firm committed to enhancing the quality of the human experience through integrated design. We are a team of high-energy professionals who share a passion for design, a collaborative approach, and a casual culture. We solve challenges by leveraging the collective expertise and ingenuity of the best and brightest minds across development, design, and construction.

The Role We Want You For

The Senior Electrical Engineer will lead the design and implementation of electrical systems for mission-critical facilities, including data centers, advanced manufacturing plants, and other high-reliability environments. This role requires deep technical expertise in medium- and low-voltage power distribution, utility interfaces, standby generation, UPS systems, grounding, and redundancy strategies essential for 24/7 operations. The ideal candidate will have experience in designing electrical infrastructure that meets stringent uptime and efficiency requirements while coordinating with cross-disciplinary teams in a fast-paced, design-build environment.

The Specifics of the Role

  • Lead design of medium-voltage (up to 35 kV) and low-voltage distribution, including MV systems from the point of interconnection or on-site substation through switchgear, transformers, standby generator plants, UPS systems, grounding, and redundancy topologies (e.g., N+1, 2N, distributed-redundant, block-redundant) for data centers and other high-availability environments.
  • Perform short-circuit, coordination, and arc flash studies to optimize electrical system reliability and safety.
  • Perform cable ampacity calculations, including Neher-McGrath analysis for underground duct bank thermal modeling, to size feeders and validate MV/LV distribution under data center loading conditions.
  • Collaborate closely with architectural, mechanical, and structural teams to integrate electrical systems into overall project design.
  • Manage client relationships and support construction execution, presenting technical solutions, providing field support, and resolving technical challenges to ensure alignment with operational goals.
  • Mentor junior engineers, contribute to the continuous improvement of design standards and best practices, and stay current with emerging technologies and trends in the mission-critical industry.

Requirements

  • BS degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET institution required.
  • 8+ years of experience in Electrical Engineering, with at least 3 years focused on mission-critical or data center projects.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License preferred, with the ability to attain licenses in multiple states; highly experienced unlicensed candidates with strong mission-critical design backgrounds are welcome to apply.
  • Demonstrated experience designing medium-voltage (up to 35 kV) and low-voltage distribution systems, including utility coordination, generator plants, switchgear, protective device coordination, and cable ampacity analysis (Neher-McGrath / IEEE 399 / IEEE 835) for high-reliability facilities.
  • Expertise in software tools such as SKM Power*Tools, ETAP, or EasyPower for power system analysis, and AmpCalc or CYMCAP for cable ampacity and duct bank thermal modeling.
  • Strong knowledge of NEC, IEEE, NFPA 70E, and other relevant codes and standards.
  • Experience working in a design-build or integrated project delivery (IPD) environment is a plus.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.

Some Things You Should Know

  • No other builder can offer the collaborative design-build approach that Clayco does.
  • We work on creative, complex, award-winning, high-profile jobs.
  • The pace is fast!
