Job description

Our client, a law firm in El Segundo, CA, is seeking an experienced Legal Assistant to support its busy general liability defense practice. This position is ideal for a legal professional with solid civil litigation experience who is comfortable managing litigation deadlines, coordinating attorney schedules, and handling filings and discovery from inception through ongoing case activity.The ideal candidate will be organized, proactive, detail-oriented, and able to work independently while collaborating closely with attorneys and the broader legal team. You must have a strong general liability defense/civil litigation background and be comfortable taking ownership of the day-to-day details that keep active litigation matters moving. The ability to anticipate attorney needs, stay ahead of deadlines, and quickly learn the firm's workflow will be important.
  • Schedule: Monday-Friday, approximately 8:30 AM-5:00 PM
  • Type: Temp-to-Hire / Potential Direct Hire
  • Pay Rate: $35-38/hour

Responsibilities:
  • Provide day-to-day legal and administrative support to attorneys handling general liability defense matters.
  • Manage complex litigation calendars, including court deadlines, hearings, meetings, depositions, and other case events.
  • Prepare and coordinate initial discovery and responsive discovery, including serving and responding to discovery requests.
  • Prepare, file, and serve motions and related litigation documents.
  • Assist with preparation of responsive pleadings and initial discovery.
  • Coordinate depositions, meetings, hearings, and other litigation-related events.
  • Prepare, organize, and maintain pleadings, discovery, correspondence, and case files.
  • Monitor deadlines and ensure attorneys are aware of upcoming court and case requirements.
  • E-file and serve documents through applicable court and service systems.
  • Communicate with attorneys, clients, opposing counsel, court personnel, and other parties as appropriate.
  • Assist with general litigation workflow and administrative tasks as needed.

Required Qualifications:
  • Prior experience as a Legal Assistant supporting general liability defense or civil litigation attorneys.
  • Strong understanding of the litigation process and related terminology.
  • Hands-on experience with discovery, including serving and responding to discovery.
  • Experience filing and serving motions and other litigation documents.
  • Experience preparing or assisting with responsive pleadings and initial discovery.
  • Strong calendaring and deadline-management skills.
  • Experience scheduling depositions, meetings, hearings, and other case-related events.
  • Excellent organization and attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proactive, dependable, and able to work effectively as part of a legal team.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
