What is a freelance digital illustrator?

Freelance digital illustrators are independent artists who create artwork using digital tools and software for various clients or projects, rather than working as a full-time employee at a single company. They may work on illustrations for books, advertising, websites, games, or social media. Freelance illustrators manage their own schedules, find their own clients, and handle business aspects such as contracts and invoicing. This career offers creative freedom and flexibility, but also requires strong self-management and marketing skills.

How do freelance digital illustrators typically find and manage client projects?

Freelance digital illustrators often find clients through online platforms, social media, and personal networks, as well as by showcasing their portfolios on dedicated art websites. Managing projects usually involves clear communication with clients about project requirements, deadlines, and revisions. Many illustrators use project management tools or contracts to keep work organized and ensure mutual expectations are met. Developing time management skills is important, as juggling multiple projects with different timelines and specifications is a common challenge.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance digital illustrator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Digital Illustrator, you need strong drawing skills, creativity, and proficiency in digital art techniques, often supported by a portfolio showcasing your work. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Procreate is essential, along with knowledge of file formats and digital publishing platforms. Excellent communication, time management, and the ability to interpret client briefs are standout soft skills in this field. These competencies are crucial for producing high-quality illustrations that meet client expectations and for managing successful freelance projects.

What is the difference between Freelance Digital Illustrator vs Graphic Designer?

AspectFreelance Digital IllustratorGraphic Designer
CredentialsPortfolio, artistic skills, sometimes art-related certificationsDesign degree or certification often preferred
Work EnvironmentFreelance, remote, client-based projectsAgency, in-house, or freelance roles
Industry UsagePublishing, entertainment, advertising, gamingAdvertising, branding, marketing, print and digital media

While both roles involve visual creation, Freelance Digital Illustrators focus on creating original artwork and illustrations, often for specific projects like books or games. Graphic Designers develop visual concepts for branding, marketing, and communication. The main difference lies in the emphasis on artistic illustration versus broader design projects, though skills and credentials often overlap.

Job description

About Saylor

Saylor is an entertainment-led creative agency built for brands that want to earn attention, notย interrupt it. Founded by former Netflix and Disney marketers, we exist at the intersection ofย culture, storytelling, and strategy, bringing the sensibility of entertainment to brands ready to actย less like advertisers and more like creators.

Saylor exists to help brands become the show - not the ad break. We watched agencies keep makingย ads in a world where people want to be entertained. We started Saylor to change that: To help brandsย act like creators, not corporations. To think like publishers, not advertisers. To stop chasing attention,ย and start earning it.

We're a tightknit crew who collaborate without ego, stay curious, and always show up for oneย another. We foster a supportive space where diverse perspectives are celebrated, hierarchy neverย blocks great ideas, and everyone is empowered to jump in, solve problems, and push creativeย boundaries together.

Position Overview

Saylor seeks a social-forward, entertainment marketing obsessed Freelance Graphic Designer to execute high-quality creative projects and pitch decks with a high level of design expertise. This role requires a professional who can seamlessly integrate sophisticated design solutions with strategic marketing objectives, grounded in an existing brand system. The ideal candidate will have exceptional social instincts, a solid understanding of brand identity, and the ability to work both collaboratively and autonomously.

The Freelance Graphic Designer will work closely with Saylor's Art Directorsย  and Design Lead to design and format pitch decks and mocks, and execute day-to-day design needs of specific agency clients. You will be responsible for building visually compelling content and executing comprehensive design needs for campaigns. You will work across platforms, art styles, and a diverse set of client needs. We are looking for a passionate designer who is able to communicate effectively and foster a positive work environment.

About You

You are a design fundamentalist with a social-first filter. You have a deep appreciation for the "rules" of a brand system but know exactly how to bend them to make a post feel native to a specific platform. You have a strong eye for layout and typography, and you take pride in the details that make a design feel premium. You are a fast, iterative thinker who can look at a library of assets and quickly see how to combine them into something fresh and engaging. You thrive in a collaborative environment where ideas are shared freely, and you are always looking for ways to elevate the visual voice of the brands you work on. You are self-motivated and comfortable taking a project from a loose concept to a polished, final deliverable with minimal hand-holding.

Location and Salary

This is a freelance role with a salary range of $50-$75/hr, depending on experience. This person must be West Coast-based. The ability to come into Saylor's Echo Park (Los Angeles) office twice weekly on Wednesdays and Thursdays is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement high-quality visual elements across various media, including digital, social, and more.
  • Execute social-first design work that is strictly grounded in and elevates existing brand systems.
  • Concept, iterate, and build visually compelling content autonomously using provided asset libraries.
  • Oversee multiple assets from conception through completion in collaboration with cross-functional team members.
  • Work closely with the ACD/Art Director and cross-functional team members to verify design specifications are met.
  • Bring client visions to life with high creative standards while staying on the pulse of industry trends.
  • Integrate new design technologies and methodologies to keep the agency at the forefront of design innovation.
  • Research and educate yourself on our client's visual goals to ensure all creative is strategically aligned.
  • Pitch artistic directions internally to help guide the visual trajectory of a campaign.
  • Provide quality control on all assets to ensure they meet platform nuances and technical requirements before delivery.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of graphic design experience within a creative agency in the entertainment sector or a similar fast-paced environment.
  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, AfterEffects, InDesign), Google Slides, PowerPoint, and Keynote, and project management software (Asana/Monday.com). Extensive knowledge of digital design processes, digital marketing, and motion design.ย
  • Must be comfortable with and capable of performing motion graphics.
  • Strong portfolio showcasing a broad range of creative projects with a focus on layout, typography, and brand identity.
  • Exceptional eye for visual composition and a deep understanding of color theory.
  • Experience working in a diverse range of mediums and formats with a focus on platform-specific nuances.
  • Proven ability to iterate quickly and produce high-quality work under tight deadlines.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and team collaboration skills.
  • Effective time management skills and the ability to meet deadlines autonomously.
  • Honed ability to give and receive constructive criticism.
  • Strong understanding of marketing, corporate identity, and multimedia design.

Benefits

We offer a competitive salary, health insurance, 401k, generous vacation, and great opportunities for growth within the company.ย
