What is a freelance craft artist?

Freelance craft artists are independent professionals who create handmade objects, artworks, or decorative items using a variety of materials and techniques. Unlike artists employed by a company, freelancers work for themselves, often selling their creations at craft fairs, online marketplaces, or through custom commissions. They may specialize in mediums such as pottery, textiles, jewelry, wood, or paper. Freelance craft artists manage both the creative and business aspects of their work, including marketing, client relations, and finances. This role offers creative freedom but also requires strong self-motivation and business skills.

What are some common challenges freelance craft artists face when managing their business operations?

Freelance craft artists often juggle multiple aspects of their business, such as marketing, client communication, inventory management, and bookkeeping, in addition to creating their art. Balancing creative work with administrative tasks can be demanding, especially when handling fluctuating workloads or seasonal demand. Building a consistent client base and pricing work appropriately are also ongoing challenges. Many craft artists find joining online marketplaces, setting clear work schedules, and networking with other creatives helpful in addressing these hurdles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance craft artist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Craft Artist, you need strong artistic skills, creativity, and proficiency in various crafting techniques, often supported by a portfolio showcasing your work. Familiarity with design software, online marketplaces (like Etsy), and basic photography is beneficial for creating, marketing, and selling your crafts. Excellent self-motivation, time management, and communication skills help you manage projects and build client relationships. These abilities are crucial for producing quality work, maintaining a steady workflow, and growing a successful freelance business.

What is the difference between Freelance Craft Artist vs Craft Designer?

Freelance Craft Artists focus on creating handmade crafts for clients or markets, often working independently. Craft Designers develop new craft product concepts, combining artistic skills with design principles, typically working in more structured environments. Both roles require craft skills and creativity, but Freelance Craft Artists emphasize hands-on creation, while Craft Designers focus on conceptual design and product development.

Job description

Join the largest and fastest growing independent artist merchandise company in the space, work across contemporary recording artist's e-commerce stores, tours, retail programs, album rollouts + more.

TITOL is seeking a Creative Operations Director to drive operational excellence across the creative team at a high level, informed by refined taste, clear perspective, and deep understanding of contemporary fashion, trends, and apparel as a whole. You'll manage project execution, optimize workflows, and ensure seamless collaboration between creative, brand, and production teams, serving as the operational backbone of the creative department, balancing strategic priorities with day-to-day execution, ensuring projects are delivered on time, within scope, and aligned with business objectives.

The ideal candidate is a seasoned project and operations leader who thrives in fast-paced environments, is able to allocate resources with precision, and can gain trust across both internal and external teams. They continuously sharpen creative processes to drive efficiency, visibility, and scale. Just as importantly, they bring a high level of taste and creative fluency - able to understand, distill, extrapolate, communicate, and craft a plan to execute the distinct visions of every client on our roster.

Just as critically, this person has their finger on the pulse of contemporary culture. They're fluent in the brands, artists, and key figures who move the needle, and dialed into the day-to-day across music, entertainment, footwear, fashion, and culture at large. They have an instinctive read on the landscape, and they understand what resonates, what drives conversation, why it matters, who it speaks to, and where it fits in the bigger picture.

Working Environment:

In-office 5 days/week with occasional travel or on-site support required. May involve weekend or extended hours during peak seasons. Very fast-paced and detail-driven environment, with a focus on problem-solving, managing multiple parallel projects, and re-prioritizing tasks as necessary.

What You'll Do

Creative Project & Program Management

  • Lead the end-to-end management of multiple concurrent creative projects from intake through final delivery, ensuring timelines, milestones, and deliverables are met.

  • Develop and maintain detailed project plans, schedules, and workflows that support efficient execution across all creative initiatives.

  • Monitor project health, proactively identify risks or bottlenecks, and implement solutions to keep work moving forward.

  • Balance competing priorities while adapting quickly to changing needs, shifting deadlines, and evolving stakeholder expectations.

  • Ensure seamless project transitions between creative, production, brand, and other internal teams through clear documentation and organized handoffs.

Resource Planning & Team Operations

  • Oversee creative resource allocation across multiple projects, balancing team capacity, skill sets, business priorities, and deadlines.

  • Continuously evaluate workloads and proactively reassign resources as priorities shift to maximize efficiency and prevent bottlenecks.

  • Partner with creative leadership to forecast staffing needs and recommend additional support when necessary.

  • Track team utilization and identify opportunities to improve productivity and operational effectiveness.

Freelancer & Vendor Management

  • Recruit, onboard, and manage a diverse network of freelance creatives, production partners, and external vendors to support creative output.

  • Build and maintain long-term relationships with trusted creative partners to ensure flexibility and scalability during periods of increased demand.

  • Coordinate contracts, project assignments, timelines, and performance expectations for external resources.

  • Evaluate freelancer and vendor performance to maintain a high-quality talent network.

Creative Workflow & Process Optimization

  • Continuously improve creative operations by identifying opportunities to streamline workflows, reduce inefficiencies, and establish scalable best practices.

  • Develop standardized project management processes, templates, documentation, and operating procedures that improve consistency across the organization.

  • Maintain visibility across all active projects and programs, ensuring stakeholders have timely updates on progress, risks, dependencies, and key milestones.

  • Drive accountability by following up on action items, escalating issues when appropriate, and ensuring projects remain on track.

Asset Management & Organization

  • Own and maintain the department's digital asset management structure, including Dropbox and other creative file repositories.

  • Establish and enforce organizational standards, file naming conventions, version control, and archival processes to ensure assets remain easily accessible and up to date.

  • Partner with creative team members to ensure project files are organized, complete, and ready for downstream production or distribution.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Serve as the primary operational partner between the creative team and internal stakeholders including brand, production, and other business partners.

  • Translate stakeholder objectives, brand requirements, and business priorities into clear project plans and actionable creative deliverables.

  • Lead recurring project status meetings, creative reviews, and cross-functional check-ins to align teams, identify blockers, and establish next steps.

  • Foster strong partnerships by maintaining transparent communication, managing expectations, and ensuring stakeholders remain informed throughout the project lifecycle.

Communication & Stakeholder Management

  • Communicate project status, timelines, risks, and resource needs clearly to leadership, internal teams, and external partners.

  • Navigate competing requests with sound judgment, determining true business urgency while balancing overall team priorities.

  • Build trusted relationships with internal creative teams, designers, agency partners, freelancers, and vendors through proactive communication and collaboration.

  • Act as a central point of coordination to ensure alignment across all project stakeholders.

Who You Are
  • 5+ years of experience in creative operations, project management, brand operations, production, or a related field.

  • A refined eye and high taste level - able to interpret, communicate, and elevate a range of distinct creative visions.

  • Proven experience managing multiple complex creative projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.

  • Strong understanding of creative development processes, branding, marketing campaigns, and production workflows.

  • Demonstrated experience with resource planning, capacity management, and operational optimization.

  • Experience managing freelancers, agencies, and external creative partners.

  • Exceptional organizational, communication, and stakeholder management skills.

  • Highly detail-oriented with the ability to balance strategic planning and tactical execution.

  • Fluent in Adobe Creative Suite and Figma.
