What is freelance computer programming?

Freelance computer programming involves working independently as a programmer or developer, rather than being employed by a single company. Freelancers take on projects from various clients, which can range from building websites and applications to troubleshooting software and writing code for specific tasks. This type of work offers flexibility in choosing projects, setting schedules, and working remotely. However, it also requires managing your own business tasks, such as finding clients, negotiating contracts, and handling taxes.

What are common challenges freelance computer programmers face when managing multiple clients simultaneously?

Freelance computer programmers often juggle several projects and clients at once, which can present challenges such as balancing deadlines, prioritizing tasks, and maintaining clear communication. Effective time management and organizational skills are crucial to ensure that deliverables are met and client expectations are managed. Additionally, freelancers must be proactive in setting boundaries and clarifying project scopes to avoid scope creep and ensure a healthy work-life balance. Building transparent communication channels with clients helps prevent misunderstandings and fosters long-term professional relationships.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Freelance Computer Programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Computer Programmer, you need strong coding abilities in relevant programming languages, problem-solving skills, and a solid understanding of software development principles, typically supported by a degree or equivalent practical experience. Familiarity with version control systems (like Git), project management tools, and knowledge of frameworks or platforms specific to your niche is highly valued. Excellent communication, time management, and self-motivation are essential soft skills for managing client relationships and deadlines. These skills ensure you can deliver high-quality solutions, maintain client satisfaction, and succeed in a competitive freelance market.

Associate Product Designer

TrueLoyal

San Antonio, TX • On-site

Full-time

Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, Retirement, PTO

Posted 7 days ago

Job description

TrueLoyal is looking for an Associate Product Designer to own design and management for one of our two flagship product surfaces: UGC & Community (where brands turn customers into a media engine through missions, rights workflows, and Hootsuite, Instagram, and TikTok integrations) or Loyalty Platform (where brands build tier programs, points economies, rewards catalogs, streaks, missions, and the full member journey). We will match you to the right seat based on your portfolio, your obsessions, and what you can talk about for an hour without checking the time.
Think of this as an apprenticeship in consumer product design at enterprise scale. You won't just be pushing pixels; you'll learn how to translate customer conversations into shipped product, how to design for an admin operator and an end consumer in the same week, and how to ship AI-native product alongside engineers who treat you as a peer. Our programs run with some the largest brands in the world with tens of millions of users, and you will see your work in front of real members within your first month.
This is a fully in-office role, Monday through Friday, at the Scaleworks office in Downtown San Antonio. You will report directly to and be personally coached by our VP of Product, who came up through gaming and AI product work and is invested in building you into a senior IC.
Key Responsibilities
  • Surface Ownership: Own design across your assigned product surface (UGC or Loyalty), including the admin console, the member-facing experience, and the visual system that ties them together.
  • Discovery & Synthesis: Sit in on customer calls with brand operators (social and community managers for UGC; loyalty program managers and CRM leads for Loyalty); turn raw conversations into design input, using AI tooling as your accelerant.
  • Prototyping in Modern Tools: Build wireframes, hi-fi mocks, and working prototypes in Figma, v0, Claude Design, or Figma AI. Comfort prototyping in code is a plus.
  • Pod Delivery: Work directly with the engineers in your pod through delivery; run design QA on staging, file bug reports, and partner on fixes before release.
  • Design System Contribution: Contribute to the visual language and component library used across the Advocacy or Loyalty surface.
  • Documentation: Help maintain product documentation, write release notes, and support Customer Success with enablement materials.
  • Live Operations Awareness: Treat the product with a mission critical mindset; learn how the team supports customers when issues come up.
  • Roadmap & Prioritization: Help build and maintain the backlog for your surface; size and sequence design work in partnership with the VP of Product & Product Owner, and make the case for what ships next and what waits.
Who You Are
  • Systems Thinker: You see the rules behind the experience. Whether it's a game economy, a tiered loyalty program, or a social feed, you intuit why people do what they do and design accordingly.
  • Craft Obsessed: You sweat the details. Spacing, hierarchy, microcopy, motion. You can talk about a single interaction for thirty minutes and not get bored.
  • AI-Native by Default: Your instinct is to think with Claude or prototype with v0, not to spin alone. You can speak specifically to what AI tools are good at and you automate everything you can.
  • Self-Starter: You don't wait for permission. You ship a rough cut on Tuesday and iterate by Friday. You see problems and pick them up without being asked. You drive people to get it done.

Player-Designer: You learn fastest by using things. You can talk for an hour about a loyalty program, social platform, a game or other product you love and what makes it work.
Requirements
Experience & Skills
  • 0-2 years of experience in product design, UX, or interaction design (internships, freelance, and capstone projects count).
  • A portfolio of student work, internship work, or personal projects that shows your design thinking and visual craft. We will look at it carefully.
  • Working fluency in Figma. Comfort prototyping interactions, not just static screens.
  • Daily use of Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, v0, Claude Design, Figma AI, or similar AI tools in your design workflow.
  • Strong written communication. You can take meeting notes, write a clear ticket, and explain a design decision.
  • For the UGC seat: a social media native who lives on TikTok and Instagram, understands creator and community dynamics, and can articulate why one social product feels different from another. Running a community yourself (Discord server, club, creator collective) is a strong plus.
  • For the Loyalty seat: a love of game economics, gamification, progression systems, behavioral incentives, and the mechanics that make people keep coming back. Having designed a gamification or economic system that you can talk about is a strong plus.
  • Authorization to work in the United States.
Education
Bachelor's degree in Design, HCI, UX, Visual Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field (current seniors graduating this spring are encouraged to apply). Game design, behavioral economics, or psychology degrees with strong design portfolios will also be considered.
Benefits
This role is perfectly suited for a proactive, strategic thinker who excels at building lasting relationships and delivering significant value to customers, ultimately contributing to business success.
