What is a freelance automotive designer?

Freelance automotive designers are independent professionals who create visual concepts, sketches, and models for vehicles such as cars, trucks, and motorcycles. Unlike in-house designers employed by automotive companies, freelancers work on a contract basis for various clients, including manufacturers, design studios, and startups. Their responsibilities often include conceptualizing new vehicle designs, developing digital or physical prototypes, and collaborating with engineers or marketing teams to refine concepts. Freelance automotive designers must stay updated on industry trends, software tools, and technical requirements to deliver innovative and feasible designs.

What kinds of projects and clients can a freelance automotive designer expect to work with, and how does project scope typically vary?

As a Freelance Automotive Designer, you may collaborate with a diverse range of clients, including automotive manufacturers, design consultancies, aftermarket companies, and even startups focusing on electric vehicles or mobility solutions. Project scopes can vary widely: some assignments might involve creating initial concept sketches and renderings, while others could require detailed CAD modeling or working alongside engineers to refine production-ready designs. Freelancers often juggle multiple projects at different stages and must adapt to various client requirements, communication styles, and timelines. This variety offers creative freedom but also demands strong organizational and client management skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance automotive designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Automotive Designer, you need strong skills in automotive design principles, sketching, and 3D modeling, typically supported by a degree in industrial or automotive design. Proficiency with CAD software such as Autodesk Alias, Blender, or SolidWorks is essential, and portfolios showcasing concept work are highly valued. Creativity, effective communication, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for collaborating with clients and managing independent projects. These skills and qualities enable designers to produce innovative concepts, meet client expectations, and succeed in a competitive freelance market.

Job description

Industrial Color is the creative production agency within CoCreativ, a family of integrated creative production companies that also includes Globaledit and Smashbox Studios. Industrial Color partners with leading brands to create and deliver content across creative development, photography, video, post-production, CGI, AI and studio production. As part of CoCreativ, Industrial Color brings together creative, production, technology and studio expertise to move complex projects from concept through final delivery.

As AI continues to reshape the creative industry, we are expanding our team with experienced artists, filmmakers and visual storytellers who can help define the future of commercial content creation while delivering work at the level expected by the world's leading brands across beauty and cosmetics, automotive, food and beverage, consumer electronics, retail, fashion and other major industries.

We’re looking for a Senior Generative AI Designer with a background in commercial creative production and experience using AI across image and video workflows.

Candidates may come from filmmaking, VFX, CG, animation, motion design, editing, compositing, retouching, post-production or a related creative discipline. You should be comfortable working from a brief, incorporating feedback and taking projects through final delivery.

The work will span a range of clients, industries and visual styles, so flexibility and strong creative problem-solving skills are important.

We are open to both full-time and freelance candidates. Freelance engagements may have the opportunity to extend into longer-term or permanent roles.

Responsibilities

  • Create high-quality AI-generated images and videos for commercial projects
  • Lead projects from creative brief through final delivery with increasing independence
  • Translate client and creative direction into compelling visual concepts and finished work
  • Develop strong visual storytelling through composition, cinematography, editing, pacing and shot design
  • Generate, direct and refine content using leading AI image and video tools
  • Combine generative AI with traditional production techniques to achieve the strongest result
  • Enhance outputs through compositing, retouching, color grading, VFX and finishing workflows
  • Interpret feedback and client notes and translate them into thoughtful creative solutions
  • Collaborate with creative directors, producers, designers, editors, retouchers, CG/VFX artists and other production partners
  • Work directly with clients when appropriate to understand their needs and help shape creative solutions
  • Help guide less experienced artists and external creative partners when needed
  • Experiment with new tools and techniques and help develop AI production workflows and creative best practices
  • Bring new ideas, approaches and technologies to the team as the capabilities of generative AI continue to evolve

Requirements

  • Professional experience in commercial production, filmmaking, VFX, CG, animation, motion design, editing, compositing, retouching, post-production or a related creative field
  • Demonstrated experience creating professional work using generative AI
  • Experience producing both still imagery and motion/video
  • Experience working against creative briefs and incorporating client or stakeholder feedback
  • Strong understanding of visual storytelling, composition and finishing
  • Hands-on knowledge of current generative AI image and video tools and workflows
  • Experience with relevant traditional creative or post-production tools
  • Ability to manage projects from concept through final delivery
  • Experience working in a production company, studio, agency, post-production environment or similarly client-driven creative setting strongly preferred

To be considered for this role, please include a link to your portfolio showcasing relevant commercial work, including both still and motion/video projects.

Benefits

The anticipated base salary range for this role is $130,000 - $170,000 annually. Ranges are based on various factors, including the labor market, job type, internal equity, and budget. Exact offers are calibrated by work location, individual candidate experience, and skills relative to the defined job requirements.

Our benefits package is designed to support your health, well-being, and time outside of work. It includes medical, dental, and vision insurance, an FSA, paid time off, summer Fridays, and regular office events that bring our teams together. Employees also enjoy a beautiful, inspiring workspace with an open gallery and two outdoor patio decks for working, connecting, and recharging.
