Job Title Part-Time Instructor of Automotive Technology - School of Industry and Trades - Modesto Junior College 2026-2027 Site: Modesto Junior College Salary Range / Other
The Hourly Range: $78.15 to $124.94
Doctorate Range: $92.09 to $128.22
(2025-2026 Certified Part-time Instructor/Overload Hourly Salary Schedule)
Part Time Faculty office Hours are paid at a flat rate of $30 per hour.

Position Summary Information
Scope of Assignment
Under the general supervision of the discipline Division Dean, will teach Automotive Technology courses in accordance with course descriptions, outlines, and class schedules (lecture and laboratory instruction); evaluate progress of student; advise students concerning educational matters, and perform other instructional related duties as assigned.
The Automotive Technology and Autobody programs prepare students for high-demand employment in the transportation and collision repair fields. Students gain hands-on experience using industry-standard tools, equipment, and repair techniques. While candidates may specialize in either Automotive Technology or Autobody, applicants with experience in both areas are also encouraged to apply. Industry partners remain highly supportive of the program and continue to express enthusiasm for MJC's commitment to up to-date facilities, equipment, and workforce-focused training.
Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree(s) or higher and two years of professional experience, or an Associate's degree(s) and six years of professional experience. Professional experience required must be directly related to teaching assignment.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL STANDARDS
  • Mobility: ability to sit or stand for long periods and move around lab and classroom environments.
  • Dexterity: fine motor skills sufficient to operate machining equipment, tools, keyboards, and instructional materials.
  • Lifting: occasional lifting of materials and tools up to 25 pounds.
  • Vision: ability to read documents, computer screens, blueprints, and machining measurements.
  • Hearing/Talking: ability to communicate clearly with students in active lab environments.
  • Emotional/Psychological: ability to make decisions, manage safety, meet deadlines, and engage with diverse students.

Desirable Qualifications
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Automotive Technology:
    • Engine performance, drivetrain and transmission, brakes, suspension, steering, alignment, automotive electrical systems, hybrid/EV fundamentals, and diagnostic systems (OBD-II, CAN bus, scan tools).
    • Strong practical and theoretical understanding of modern vehicle electronics and troubleshooting.
  • Autobody / Collision Repair:
    • Structural and non-structural repair, welding and metal work, plastic repair, painting and refinishing, and frame straightening.
    • Familiarity with modern collision repair processes and limited experience with collision-related sensors (ADAS) as applicable.
  • General:
    • Education and/or experience teaching automotive or autobody repair at the community college level.
    • Experience working with African American/Black, Hispanic, Native American, and other minoritized students.
    • Demonstrated ability to address equity gaps through culturally responsive teaching and curriculum design.
    • Understanding of HSI designation and its implications for instructional practice.

Example of Duties
GENERAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Part of the teaching assignment may be online, in the evening, and/or on Friday/Saturdays. Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Teaching lower-division college courses in Automotive Technology and/or Autobody according to area of expertise.
  • Advancing equitable student learning through high-quality instruction aligned with established course outlines.
  • Informing students of course requirements, evaluation methods, and attendance expectations.
  • Preparing and grading assignments, assessments, and examinations.
  • Maintaining accurate attendance, scholastic, and other records according to district policy.
  • Developing, assessing, and improving student-learning outcomes at the course and program levels.
  • Engaging in data inquiry and self-assessment to support student success and equity.
  • Participating in required professional development and FLEX activities.
  • Maintaining professional conduct and modeling industry-standard safety practices.
