Freelance Analytics Engineer Dbt information

What is a freelance analytics engineer dbt?

A Freelance Analytics Engineer Dbt is a professional who specializes in building, maintaining, and optimizing data transformation workflows using dbt (data build tool) on a contract or project basis. They help organizations clean, transform, and document data in their data warehouses, enabling data teams to perform accurate and efficient analytics. As freelancers, they work with multiple clients, often remotely, to design data models, write SQL-based transformations, and ensure data quality. Their expertise with dbt allows businesses to scale their analytics capabilities without hiring full-time staff.

How does a freelance analytics engineer specializing in dbt typically collaborate with client teams during a project?

As a Freelance Analytics Engineer with expertise in dbt, you will often work closely with both data engineering and business analytics teams. Your role usually involves translating business requirements into data models using dbt, conducting regular syncs to align on project goals, and providing documentation or training to client teams. Communication is key, as you'll need to clarify data definitions, troubleshoot pipeline issues, and ensure your dbt models integrate smoothly into the client's broader data infrastructure. Effective collaboration and adaptability are essential, since you'll likely juggle multiple stakeholders and varying technical environments across different projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance analytics engineer specializing in dbt, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Analytics Engineer specializing in dbt, you need strong SQL proficiency, experience with data modeling, and a solid understanding of data warehousing concepts, often backed by a degree in computer science, data analytics, or a related field. Familiarity with dbt (data build tool), cloud data platforms like Snowflake or BigQuery, version control systems such as Git, and relevant dbt certifications are highly beneficial. Excellent problem-solving abilities, strong communication skills, and the capacity to work independently help you stand out in freelance and client-facing environments. These skills are crucial for delivering accurate, scalable data solutions and maintaining productive client relationships in dynamic, project-based settings.

Job description

Are you in search of a company that resonates with your proactive spirit and entrepreneurial mindset? Your search ends here with Premier Truck Rental!

Company Overview

At Premier Truck Rental (PTR), we provide customized commercial fleet rentals nationwide, helping businesses get the right trucks and equipment to get the job done. Headquartered in Fort Wayne, Indiana, PTR is a family-owned company built on a foundation of integrity, innovation, and exceptional service. We serve a wide range of industries—including construction, utilities, and infrastructure—by delivering high-quality, ready-to-work trucks and trailers tailored to each customer's needs. At PTR, we don't just rent trucks—we partner with our customers to drive efficiency and success on every job site.

POSITION SUMMARY

As a Senior Analytics Engineer, you will serve as the technical leader responsible for building and maintaining the transformation and semantic layer that powers enterprise-wide analytics at PTR. Leveraging our modern data stack—including Fivetran, Snowflake, dbt, and Sigma—you will tackle complex data modeling challenges, establish scalable data models, and build trusted, high-performance datasets that drive business decision-making.

Working closely with Data Engineering, Data Architecture, and the BI team, you will translate business requirements into governed, reusable data models while defining best practices for modeling, testing, documentation, and data quality. As the technical expert for the dbt and Sigma ecosystem, you will mentor other engineers, promote engineering excellence, and ensure the analytics layer is reliable, scalable, and easy to consume.

This role bridges the gap between data engineering and business intelligence. Your primary focus is delivering clean, trusted, and well-governed datasets that enable the BI team to create impactful dashboards and insights across the organization.

LOCATION

Onsite in Fort Wayne, IN

PTR is prioritizing candidates located in or willing to relocate to the Fort Wayne, IN market. However, exceptional remote candidates whose experience strongly aligns with the requirements of the role may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

COMPENSATION

This position offers a competitive compensation package, benchmarked to regional market standards. It consists of a base salary plus the opportunity for quarterly profit sharing after one year of employment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Core Modeling & Semantic Layer:

Design and build the core dbt models and Sigma datasets/semantic models the business relies on, applying dimensional modeling standards and software engineering best practices (modularity, version control, code review).

Enterprise Shared Dimensions:

Own the enterprise shared dimensions — customer hierarchy, GL hierarchy, time dimensions, fiscal calendars, territory mappings, and other conformed dimensions used across Finance, Commercial, and Fleet/Ops.

Performance & Optimization:

Tune model and warehouse performance in Snowflake; optimize SQL transformations and manage compute/cost efficiency as data volume grows.

Testing, Quality & Observability:

Establish and enforce testing and documentation standards in dbt; partner with the team on data quality and observability practices to ensure trust in all published data assets.

Mentorship & Standards:

Mentor Analytics Engineer I / junior engineers, review their code, and set the modeling patterns and conventions others follow (naming, layering, environment strategy).

BI Partnership:

Partner directly with the BI analyst team to translate dashboard and reporting requirements into robust dataset designs that enable reliable self-service analytics.

Documentation & Versioning:

Maintain clear documentation of models, datasets, and transformation logic using version control and CI/CD practices so BI Analysts can self-serve.

Continuous Improvement:

Identify opportunities to automate manual processes, reduce technical debt, and improve the scalability and reliability of the analytics layer.

REQUIREMENTS

MUST HAVE

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Analytics, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
  • 5+ years of experience in analytics engineering, data engineering, or ELT/data modeling, including demonstrated senior-level ownership of a transformation layer.
  • Advanced, production-level expertise with dbt for building, testing, and documenting models.
  • Strong SQL proficiency for performance-tuned querying, transformation, and optimization.
  • Deep experience with a modern cloud data warehouse (Snowflake strongly preferred).
  • Proven expertise in dimensional/data model (star and snowflake schemas, conformed dimension, and SCDs) and semantic-layer design.
  • Experience with Fivetran (or similar ELT/ingestion tooling) and workflow orchestrations such as Astronomer.
  • Hands-on experience with version control and CI/CD practices for data workflows.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers, lead design/code reviews, and set technical standards.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to develop strong business acumen across multiple business units.

 NICE TO HAVE

  • Hands-on experience with Sigma and semantic modeling.
  • Experience with data observability tools.
  • Python for scripting, automation, or light transformation logic.
  • Understanding of data governance, metadata management, and data privacy/compliance standards.
