Paramedic (NREMT-P) Job Description (PRN Night Position)

Job Summary

The Emergency Department Paramedic in a Critical Access Hospital (CAH) provides advanced in-hospital emergency medical care to patients of all ages. Working collaboratively with physicians, advanced practice providers, and nursing staff, the ED Paramedic performs patient assessments, initiates treatment per protocol (physician order), and assists with emergency, trauma, and medical procedures. This role requires a high degree of proficient clinical skills, adaptability, and critical thinking in the nature of a rural healthcare setting.

Louisiana-licensed Paramedics may function within the Emergency Department under the supervision and direction of the Medical Director and ED practitioners, performing all skills and medication administrations authorized by the Louisiana Department of Health Scope of Practice (including Agency Expansion of Scope). This practice model is approved by the Governing Body and complies with CMS Conditions of Participation for Critical Access Hospitals

Requirements:

Minimal Requirements/Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Hold an active, valid and unencumbered National Registered Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic as well as licensure as a Paramedic in the State of Louisiana
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) to be obtained within 3 months of hire.
  • Trauma certification (ITLS, PHTLS or TNCC) required or obtained within 3 months of hire
  • Minimum 3 years of paramedic experience, preferably in 911, emergency, or rural settings
  • Certified Critical Care Paramedic (CCP-C) or Critical Care Transport certification through EMS academy required, but will consider previous certification as CCT and or years of experience in lieu of current certification
  • Maintain motivation, sense of urgency, professionalism, and seek opportunity to further job knowledge to serve the patient demographic
  • Strong clinical judgment and decision-making skills in high-pressure situations.
  • Ability to function as a team in the emergency department setting with nursing staff.
  • Proficiency in Scope of Practice as listed per the Louisiana Department of Health
  • Excellent critical thinking, multitasking, and prioritization skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to adapt to rapidly changing patient conditions and limited resources.

Bunkie General Hospital Policy on Paramedic Role in the Emergency Department

  • Paramedics operating as employees of Bunkie General Hospital are to adhere to the policy set forth by the organization. Independent practice is strictly prohibited. Paramedics are to operate only in the Emergency Department.
  • Paramedics operating as a Bunkie General Hospital employee are authorized to perform all skills, procedures, and medication administrations designated as “Approved” or

“Agency Expansion of Scope (AES)” at the Paramedic level in the LDH EMS Scope of Practice Matrix (2024), provided that:

  • Training and competency validation are documented
  • Procedures are included in Medical Director–approved ED protocols
  • Performance occurs under the supervision model outlined by Bunkie General Hospital Policy

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift, push, pull, and move patients and equipment (up to 100 lbs with assistance).
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and kneel for extended periods.
  • Ability to work in high-stress environments with exposure to bloodborne pathogens and hazardous materials.

Work Environment:

  • Fast-paced emergency department in a rural Critical Access Hospital.
  • Variable shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call as required.
  • Frequent exposure to emergency situations, trauma, and emotionally challenging circumstances
