What is Free RBT Training?

Free RBT Training refers to complimentary educational programs that prepare individuals to become Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs). These training programs typically cover the core competencies required by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB), such as measurement, assessment, skill acquisition, behavior reduction, and professional conduct. Free RBT Training is often offered online by nonprofit organizations, ABA clinics, or some educational institutions, and it fulfills the 40-hour training requirement needed to qualify for the RBT certification exam. While the training may be free, additional costs such as the competency assessment and BACB application fees may still apply.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT), and why are they important?

To thrive as a Registered Behavior Technician, you need a high school diploma or equivalent, completion of RBT training, and passing the RBT competency assessment and exam. Familiarity with data collection software, behavior analysis tools, and adherence to BACB guidelines are typically required. Patience, strong communication, and the ability to follow detailed instructions are essential soft skills in this role. These skills ensure effective implementation of behavioral interventions and support positive outcomes for clients with developmental or behavioral challenges.

What can I expect during the free RBT training, and how does it prepare me for working as a Registered Behavior Technician?

During free RBT training, you can expect a structured curriculum that covers the core competencies required by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board, including data collection, client interaction, and ethical guidelines. Training is typically delivered online or in-person and often combines video lectures, interactive modules, and practical exercises to help you apply concepts in real-world scenarios. You'll also learn about collaborating with Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) and other team members. Upon completion, you'll be better prepared for the RBT exam and for performing entry-level tasks in applied behavior analysis settings, such as schools or clinics.

Job description

Location: NW Indiana/Hammond area ย |ย  Remote training ย |ย  Future employment in-home

Achievers ABA is opening a new cohort of our no-cost RBT training program. If you've been working with children, supporting people with disabilities, studying psychology or education, or simply looking for meaningful work that grows into a real career โ€” this may be exactly what you've been looking for.

A Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) is a nationally credentialed professional who delivers Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy, primarily working 1:1 with children with autism. It's one of the most in-demand entry-level credentials in behavioral health โ€” and a recognized stepping stone toward becoming a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). We'll train you from the ground up, at no cost to you.

We want to be direct about what this program is and what it isn't.

The training is 40 hours, completed online at your own pace. It's free, it's flexible, and it's designed to be finished in four weeks. What it requires is consistency โ€” roughly 2โ€“3 hours a day, on your own time, without someone managing your schedule. That kind of self-direction is exactly what makes a strong RBT, and it's what we look for before you ever see a client.

The Program
  • 40-hour BACB-compliant RBT training, delivered through Rethink

  • Self-paced โ€” you set your schedule; we monitor progress and are available for support

  • One group collaboration meeting and optional check-ins with our clinical team

  • Expected completion: 4 weeks

  • No cost to you at any point during training

What Happens After

Once you complete the training and pass the competency assessment with one of our BCBAs, you'll apply for your RBT credential through the BACB and sit for the Pearson VUE exam. Achievers ABA reimburses the full $110 in exam and application fees after your first 30 days of employment.

After certification and onboarding approval, you'll work 1:1 with children with autism in their homes and in clinic โ€” implementing individualized treatment plans under direct BCBA supervision.

What We Offer Upon Hire
  • Competitive hourly pay

  • Paid drive time between clients

  • Ongoing BCBA supervision and mentorship from day one

  • Free CEUs โ€” over $500 in annual value

  • A clear advancement pathway for those pursuing BCBA certification

  • Full-time and part-time positions available

  • Pet insurance, performance bonuses, referral bonuses, and team events

Who We're Looking For

We're open to candidates with no prior ABA experience. The RBT credential is specifically designed to be earned through training โ€” you don't need it before you apply. What matters more than your background is your reliability, your communication, and your genuine interest in this work.

That said, certain backgrounds translate exceptionally well into this role:

  • Paraprofessionals and special education aides who work with students with disabilities

  • Direct support professionals (DSPs) looking to advance their credential and earning potential

  • Caregivers โ€” paid or unpaid โ€” who have supported someone with autism, a developmental disability, or a behavioral health need

  • College students or recent graduates in psychology, applied behavior analysis, social work, education, child development, sociology, or human services

  • CNAs, medical assistants, or healthcare workers looking for a clinical role outside of hospital or facility settings

  • Behavioral aides or behavior interventionists currently working in ABA without a credential

  • Anyone with hands-on experience working with children โ€” tutoring, coaching, childcare, youth work โ€” who wants to turn that into a career

If you see yourself in any of the above, we want to hear from you.

Our clients are served in the afternoons, evenings, and on weekends. If those hours genuinely don't work for you, this role likely isn't the right fit right now โ€” and we'd rather be upfront about that.

You're also a strong fit if:

  • You're 18 or older with a high school diploma or equivalent

  • You can pass a background check and are eligible for hire

  • You have reliable transportation in the Hammond/NW Indiana area (e.g., Gary, Merrillville, Valparaiso, and Crown Point)

  • You're available afternoons, evenings, and/or weekends

  • You can commit 2โ€“3 hours per day to complete independent training within 4 weeks

  • You want to work directly with children and families โ€” not just fill a job, but build something

Bilingual Spanish/English candidates are especially encouraged to apply and are compensated at a higher rate upon hire.

How to Apply

Submit your resume and answer three short questions on the next screen. Take your time with them โ€” they're a genuine part of how we evaluate candidates, and a strong application starts there.
