What is a fragrance?

A Fragrance job involves creating, developing, and evaluating scents for perfumes, personal care products, or household items. Professionals in this field, such as perfumers or fragrance evaluators, work with essential oils, aroma chemicals, and other ingredients to craft unique scents. They often collaborate with product development teams and conduct market research to ensure fragrances align with consumer preferences. Careers in fragrance may exist in cosmetic companies, fragrance houses, or research labs. Strong knowledge of chemistry, olfaction, and creativity are essential in this industry.

What kinds of career development opportunities are available in the fragrance industry?

The fragrance industry offers a variety of career development opportunities, depending on your interests and expertise. Professionals can move from entry-level lab technician or sales roles to more specialized positions such as perfumer, fragrance evaluator, or account manager. Many companies provide structured mentorship, in-house training programs, and exposure to international markets, which help broaden your expertise. You may also have chances to collaborate with diverse teams, including marketing, product development, and research, allowing you to build a versatile skill set. Advancement is typically based on a combination of technical knowledge, creative ability, and relationship-building skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the fragrance position, and why are they important?

To thrive in the fragrance industry, particularly in roles such as fragrance evaluator, perfumer, or fragrance sales specialist, a strong understanding of scent composition, olfactory skills, and relevant educational background (such as chemistry or cosmetic science) is essential. Familiarity with fragrance formulation tools, industry-standard software, and IFRA (International Fragrance Association) regulations is often required. Exceptional interpersonal, presentation, and client relationship skills help professionals stand out in team environments and when meeting clients. These skills ensure accurate product development, maintain regulatory compliance, and drive successful collaborations within the competitive fragrance market.

How to get into fragrance jobs?

To pursue a fragrance job, candidates typically need a background in chemistry, cosmetics, or perfumery, often supported by relevant education or training. Gaining experience through internships or entry-level positions in cosmetic or fragrance companies can be helpful. Developing a strong understanding of scent composition and industry tools like fragrance databases can improve job prospects.

Job description

Napa Fragrance is seeking a warm, confident, and curious individual to join our team in a part-time position with the opportunity to grow into a full-time role. This position is ideal for someone who loves connecting with people, thrives in an experiential retail environment, and is genuinely excited by fragrance, design, and hospitality.

About the Role

As a Fragrance Associate, you will be a key part of the Napa Fragrance guest experienceโ€”welcoming customers into our studio, introducing our fragrance collection, and guiding groups through interactive home fragrance experiences.

This is a highly hands-on role. In addition to hosting and selling, you will learn to work with fragrance formulations, prepare and craft personalized home fragrance products, maintain the studio and retail environment, and help ensure every guest experience feels thoughtful, polished, and distinctly Napa Fragrance.

Our team is small, so we are looking for someone who enjoys taking ownership, notices the details, and is equally comfortable engaging a room of guests, making a product precisely to formula, and jumping in wherever needed.

About Napa Fragrance

Napa Fragrance is a home perfumery studio creating fine fragrance for the home. Guests can explore curated fragrances inspired by Napa Valley or create a custom scent designed uniquely for themselves and their home.

Rooted in craftsmanship and care, Napa Fragrance brings artistry together with thoughtful, low-waste design. This fall, we will introduce our newest collection, designed to be reused, refilled, recycled, and repurposedโ€”encouraging a slower, more intentional relationship with fragrance, meant to be lived with, not rushed.

What You'll Do

  • Welcome guests and provide knowledgeable, personalized service
  • Introduce customers to our fragrance collection and guide scent discovery
  • Host fragrance experiences and classes for groups of approximately 2โ€“10 guests
  • Confidently present fragrance concepts and tell the stories behind our products and ingredients
  • Assist customers with product selection and drive retail sales through thoughtful recommendations
  • Learn fragrance formulas and precisely measure, mix, and craft personalized products
  • Prepare the studio before experiences and reset the space between groups
  • Maintain an elevated, organized, and welcoming retail and studio environment
  • Assist with inventory, product preparation, packaging, and day-to-day studio operations
  • Support private events and off-site fragrance experiences throughout Napa Valley as needed
  • Develop strong knowledge of Napa Fragrance products, ingredients, formulations, and brand philosophy

What We're Looking For

  • 2+ years of experience in retail, hospitality, tasting rooms, or another guest-facing environment
  • Confidence speaking to and engaging both groups and one-on-one clients
  • Strong sales instincts with a service-first approach
  • A genuine interest in fragrance and eagerness to learn the art and language of scent
  • Polished communication skills and a warm, approachable presence
  • Exceptional attention to detail, particularly when measuring and crafting products
  • Comfortable learning formulas, measurements, and repeatable production processes
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently while contributing positively to a small team
  • Reliable, organized, and comfortable adapting when the day changes
  • Weekend availability required

Tentative schedule: Thursdayโ€“Sunday, approximately 10 AMโ€“6 PM

Bonus (but not required)

  • Experience in fragrance, beauty, wine, luxury retail, or premium hospitality
  • Experience leading workshops, tastings, tours, classes, or other guided experiences
  • Knowledge of fragrance, wine, design, or sensory education

What We Offer

  • Hands-on fragrance education and training
  • The opportunity to develop expertise in home perfumery and fragrance creation
  • A creative, thoughtful, and highly collaborative work environment
  • The opportunity to grow alongside an emerging Napa Valley luxury brand
  • Exposure to retail, hospitality, product creation, private events, and experiential programming
  • Potential to transition into a full-time position as the company grows

If you love storytelling, sensory experiences, beautiful spaces, and the art of hosting, weโ€™d love to meet you.

To apply, please submit your rรฉsumรฉ along with a brief note telling us why fragranceโ€”and this roleโ€”interests you.
