BACKGROUND:
Claremont McKenna College (CMC) is a highly selective, independent, coeducational, residential, undergraduate liberal arts college. Established in 1946, CMC is a member of The Claremont Colleges, a consortium of seven independent institutions in Claremont, CA.
CMC is in a significant period of physical growth, with the funding and support of the Board of Trustees to continue to methodically and strategically implement its campus master plan over the next decade and beyond, which will double the footprint of its residential Claremont campus from 75 to over 150 acres (the "Roberts Campus Plan"). The Plan includes the Robert Day Sciences Center (opened in fall 2025 and named a significant U.S. architecture project for 2025) and the Roberts Campus Sports Bowl, a new sports and recreation complex, with Phase 1 expected to be completed in 2026. The Roberts Campus Plan also includes new academic facilities, student life and housing facilities, and enhanced pedestrian walkways and gathering spaces to encourage engagement and interaction.
The Roberts Campus Plan will support improvements in the central and eastern areas of the CMC campus, including the reclamation and development of the 75-acre site to the east of Claremont Boulevard that previously served as a quarry and that has most recently served as an inert debris landfill for The Claremont Colleges.
Initiatives supported by the Campus Master Plan include the possibility for:
- Development of up to eight athletic and practice fields, a new aquatics center, golf practice range, as well as a pedestrian tunnel or bridge across Claremont Boulevard;
- Three pedestrian malls created to encourage interaction, engagement, and public art; and
- Construction of multiple academic, administrative, and campus services buildings, expanded student housing, and a campus green.

BASIC FUNCTION:
CMC seeks an Associate Vice President for Construction Management and Capital Projects to oversee the successful development and implementation of the Campus Master Plan, the new construction projects, management of a small staff, and coordination with vendors; serve as main liaison to the CMC Board of Trustees Campus Planning & Facilities Services committee; and work closely with local, state, regional agencies.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Reporting to the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer (EVP/COO), the Associate Vice President for Construction Management and Capital Projects (the AVP) works both independently and collaboratively to perform the following essential duties and responsibilities:
- Provide leadership and supervision for a small Construction Management and Capital Projects team including the Assistant Vice President for Construction Management and Capital Projects and the Business Manager.
- Manage and administer capital projects including all daily activities associated with: planning, budgeting, coordination/preparation of contract documents, project meetings, and oversight of construction activities.
- Provide expertise and consultation on College Master Plan process and, in coordination with the EVP/COO, manage the Master Plan process.
- Perform a wide range of administrative and professional duties in connection with the coordinating, scheduling, and managing of capital project construction activities and project-based budgeting.
- Develop and maintain project scopes and schedules, and coordinate project schedules with affected campus partners.
- Prepare materials for the four-times annual Board of Trustee meetings and work closely with the leadership of the Campus Planning and Facilities Services Trustee Committee.
- Serve as primary liaison with general contractors, project managers, engineers, and city and county officials for active and planned projects.
- Manage construction projects and/or supervision of project managers.
- Plan and monitor project budgets, working closely with the College's Vice President for Business and Chief Financial Officer.
- Coordinate Facilities activities with other College and The Claremont Colleges resources such as IT, voice, data, and campus safety, etc. that interface with or are influenced by construction activities and/or the capital program.
- Review and issue contracts and manage bid processes.
- Work in close partnership with the Assistant Vice President for Facilities and Campus Services in their efforts to manage the College's asset renewal and replacement program.
- Closely coordinate with other College faculty, staff, and students communicating regularly on project pathways, deadlines, and proactively soliciting input on program plans.
- Ongoing implementation of 2012 Development Agreement and Campus Master Plan with the City of Claremont.
- Ongoing implementation of 2016 Development Agreement for the East Campus with the cities of Claremont and Upland.
- Assist with the College's long term space utilization plan.
- Manage the major renovations of the College's adjacent owned homes in the Arbol Verde neighborhood.
QUALIFICATION STANDARDS & SKILLS:
EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, architecture, business, or other related field, or any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is required.
EXPERIENCE: Ten or more years of experience with increasing responsibilities in working with engineers, permit approval processes, construction management, project management, architects, contractors, and large construction projects is required. Experience at an academic institution or non-profit setting is strongly desired.
LICENSES: A valid driver's license or equivalent means of reliable transportation to off-site meetings and events is required. A valid driver's license and the ability to be insured under the College's authorized driver's policy is required to drive College-owned vehicles.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES: Individual must possess knowledge, skills, and ability to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of knowledge skills and abilities.

- High level of knowledge in project management, construction projects, utility distribution systems, site work, etc.
