How much do fpga developer jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 19, 2026, the average yearly pay for fpga developer in the United States is $132,198.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $107,000.00 and $154,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are FPGA developers?

FPGA developers are engineers who specialize in designing, programming, and testing Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). FPGAs are integrated circuits that can be configured after manufacturing to perform specific hardware functions. FPGA developers use hardware description languages like VHDL or Verilog to create digital logic designs for applications such as telecommunications, automotive systems, and signal processing. Their work requires a strong understanding of both hardware and software, as well as experience with simulation and debugging tools.

How does an FPGA Developer typically collaborate with hardware and software teams during a project?

FPGA Developers work closely with both hardware engineers and software developers to ensure seamless integration of programmable logic with the overall system. They often participate in design reviews, clarify interface requirements, and coordinate on timing and resource constraints. Regular communication and joint debugging sessions are common, especially when validating prototypes or troubleshooting system-level issues. This collaborative environment helps to ensure that FPGA solutions meet performance, functionality, and interoperability goals.

What is the difference between Fpga Developer vs Hardware Engineer?

AspectFpga DeveloperHardware Engineer
Required credentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related; FPGA design certificationsBachelor's or higher in Electrical, Computer, or Electronics Engineering; often similar certifications
Work environmentDesigning, coding, and testing FPGA hardware and firmware; often in labs or officesDesigning and testing various hardware components, including PCBs and integrated circuits
Employer and industry usageTech companies, aerospace, defense, telecommunicationsConsumer electronics, automotive, aerospace, and industrial sectors

Both roles require strong electrical engineering fundamentals and similar certifications. Fpga Developers focus specifically on FPGA hardware and firmware design, while Hardware Engineers may work on a broader range of electronic hardware. The work environments and industries overlap significantly, but Fpga Developers specialize in programmable logic devices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an FPGA Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an FPGA Developer, you need a strong background in digital design, hardware description languages (such as VHDL or Verilog), and a relevant degree in electrical engineering or computer engineering. Familiarity with FPGA development tools like Xilinx Vivado, Intel Quartus, and simulation environments is crucial, and industry certifications can provide an advantage. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are important soft skills for excelling in this role. These combined capabilities ensure the delivery of reliable, high-performance hardware solutions that meet complex system requirements.

Behind every electronic device you use, Teradyne's test technology ensures your device works right the first time, every time! Our portfolio of automation solutions help manufacturers to develop and deliver products quickly, efficiently and cost-effectively. Together, Teradyne companies deliver manufacturing automation across industries and applications around the world!

We attract, develop, and retain a high-performance workforce, comprised of people with diverse backgrounds and a shared drive for excellence. We strive to foster a positive and inclusive work environment that helps employees, and communities, thrive.

Our Purpose

TERADYNE-where experience meets innovation, and excellence is driven in every connection. We are fueled by creativity, diversity of thought, and a passion for solving hard problems. Our employees are supported to innovate, grow, and learn every day.

We cultivate a culture of inclusion that respects individual strengths, perspectives, and experiences. We believe our differences make us stronger-driving better decisions, deeper innovation, and superior results.

Opportunity Overview

Teradyne's Power Test Division is seeking an experienced and highly motivated FPGA developer to help shape the future of power semiconductor test systems.

As an FPGA Engineering Manager, you will serve as a formal people manager and technical contributor on a worldclass engineering team developing nextgeneration power test platforms. You will collaborate closely with hardware, firmware, and software teams to define FPGA functionality, architect scalable solutions, and bring complex systems from concept through production.

Key Responsibilities

  • Mentor and coach engineers, providing technical guidance, code/design reviews, and support for professional development
  • Manage and lead a team of FPGA engineers (direct reports): set goals and priorities, delegate effectively, run regular 1:1s, and ensure on-time, high-quality delivery
  • Manage a verification team, including external partners, to ensure clear scope, priorities, quality expectations, and execution cadence
  • Develop and implement FPGA designs for advanced power semiconductor test systems
  • Collaborate with crossfunctional teams to define FPGA requirements and write detailed specifications aligned with product and systemlevel needs
  • Drive FPGA development from architecture and IP selection through implementation, verification, and release
  • Contribute to FPGArelated hardware design decisions including device selection, pinout planning, and highspeed interfaces
  • Support firmware and software teams during board bringup, system integration, and factory readiness
  • Perform handson debugging and validation using lab equipment such as logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and JTAG tools
  • Help evolve FPGA architectures to support highthroughput, deterministic, and scalable power test solutions for emerging workloads including AI and widebandgap devices
  • Foster a culture of ownership, continuous improvement, and inclusive collaboration; recognize contributions and address issues constructively

All About You

We're looking for engineers who thrive on technical challenges and want their work to have realworld impact. Our commitment to customer success drives us to go the extra mile-and we're looking for someone who shares that mindset.

Minimum Technical Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience in FPGA design, implementation, and verification
  • Strong proficiency in Verilog for FPGA synthesis
  • Handson experience with AMD (Xilinx) and/or Intel (Altera) FPGA toolchains, including IP configuration and timing constraint development
  • Proven design experience with digital and mixedsignal interfaces such as highspeed serial interfaces (e.g., PCIe, SerDes), memory interfaces (DDR), ADCs/DACs, and control and communication protocols (AXI4, SPI, IC, USB)
  • Experience building verification environments, simulations, and testbenches for new FPGA features
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics and understand digital hardware design
  • Experience validating FPGA functionality on real hardware platforms
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across disciplines and cultures

Leadership & Management Attributes (Formal People Manager):

  • Driven, self-starter mindset with a bias for action and strong ownership from problem definition through delivery
  • Demonstrated ability to build and lead teams-recruiting, onboarding, mentoring, and creating an environment where engineers can do their best work
  • Experience as a direct people manager (or strong readiness to step into formal people leadership), including goal setting, regular feedback, and performance development
  • Comfortable as both a coach and a player: able to lead, delegate, and develop others while remaining hands-on in architecture, implementation, and debugging
