Foundry Assistant information

What is a foundry assistant?

Foundry Assistants are workers who help in the daily operations within a foundry, which is a facility where metal castings are produced. They typically assist with preparing molds, handling materials, operating basic machinery, cleaning equipment, and supporting skilled foundry workers. Their role is essential for maintaining safety standards, ensuring efficient production processes, and supporting the creation of metal parts and products. Foundry Assistants often work in industrial environments and may be required to follow strict safety protocols due to the presence of hot metals and heavy equipment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a foundry assistant?

To thrive as a Foundry Assistant, you need a solid understanding of basic metallurgy, foundry processes, and workplace safety, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with casting equipment, hand tools, forklifts, and safety certifications like OSHA training is typically required. Attention to detail, strong teamwork, and effective communication are vital soft skills for this role. These skills and qualifications are essential for ensuring safe operations, producing quality castings, and maintaining efficient workflow in a hazardous environment.

What are some common challenges a foundry assistant faces and how can they be addressed?

Foundry Assistants often work in demanding environments that involve high temperatures, heavy materials, and strict safety protocols. Common challenges include managing physical fatigue, maintaining focus during repetitive tasks, and ensuring all safety equipment is used properly. Addressing these challenges involves following comprehensive training, staying hydrated, using correct lifting techniques, and communicating effectively with team members. Adhering to safety standards and seeking support from experienced colleagues can help new assistants adapt to the role more smoothly.

What is the difference between Foundry Assistant vs Foundry Technician?

AspectFoundry AssistantFoundry Technician
CredentialsHigh school diploma or equivalent; on-the-job trainingHigh school diploma; technical certification or vocational training often preferred
Work EnvironmentAssists in casting processes, handles basic equipment, maintains cleanlinessOperates casting machinery, performs quality checks, troubleshooting
Employer & Industry UsageCommon in manufacturing and metal casting industriesMore specialized, found in larger foundries and metal production facilities

In summary, a Foundry Assistant supports the foundry operations with basic tasks and equipment handling, while a Foundry Technician performs more technical duties, including machinery operation and quality control. The Assistant role is ideal for entry-level workers, whereas the Technician role requires additional training or certification.

Metal Foundry Engineer
Who We Are
ME Global Inc. is headquartered in Minneapolis, MN, and operates two foundries in North America: Tempe, Arizona, and Duluth, Minnesota. We have been in business for more than 100 years and employ over 1,000 team members across five continents.
We produce high-quality metal castings for grinding media, mill liners, crushing liners, and slag pots using optimized designs and proprietary alloys developed for the global mining, aggregate, and recycling industries. Our products are used by customers in more than 40 countries.
We have strong jobs for strong people. This is your invitation to make your journey part of our journey.
About the Foundry Design Engineer Position
We are seeking a hands-on Metal Foundry Design Engineer to support the design, development, and continuous improvement of cast metal components, tooling, patterns, gating, risering, and manufacturing processes.
This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys solving real production challenges, collaborating with shop-floor teams, and turning customer requirements into reliable, manufacturable casting solutions. You will work closely with engineering, quality, production, the pattern shop, and customer-facing teams to design castings that meet dimensional, metallurgical, quality, and cost requirements. You will evaluate customer drawings and 3D models, develop foundry-friendly designs, support casting simulations, troubleshoot casting defects, and help improve processes from quotation through production launch.
Key Responsibilities
  • Review customer drawings, specifications, and 3D models to determine casting requirements and manufacturability.
  • Design and improve casting layouts, patterns, core boxes, gating, risering, chills, and related tooling.
  • Use CAD software to create or modify solid models, manufacturing drawings, and tooling concepts.
  • Support solidification and mold-filling simulations to improve casting quality and reduce scrap.
  • Partner with production, quality, and pattern shop teams to troubleshoot defects, dimensional issues, and process concerns.
  • Recommend design changes that improve castability, reduce rework, and support customer performance requirements.
  • Assist with new product launches, sample castings, process documentation, and production standards.
  • Support cost estimating and quoting by providing engineering input on tooling, cores, risers, weights, yields, heat treatment, and finishing requirements.
  • Maintain accurate engineering records, process notes, and product master data.
  • Promote a safe, quality-focused, and continuous improvement culture throughout the foundry.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related technical field preferred.
  • Experience in a metal foundry, casting operation, pattern shop, tooling environment, or heavy manufacturing setting strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of sand casting, mold design, cores, gating, risering, shrinkage, solidification, heat treatment, and casting defects.
  • Experience with CAD software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor, Creo, or similar.
  • Experience with casting simulation software such as MAGMASOFT or similar is a plus.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, GD&T, and customer requirements.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, communication, and project management skills.
  • Comfortable working in both office and foundry production environments.
  • Self-motivated, practical, and willing to collaborate directly with operators, supervisors, engineers, and customers.

What's In It For You
  • Competitive market-leading compensation.
  • Quarterly bonus opportunities based on company performance.
  • Comprehensive benefits with low employee costs.
  • Excellent retirement and savings programs with strong company contributions.
  • Work-life balance with 3 weeks of vacation, 11 paid holidays, and 48 hours of paid sick time annually.
  • Opportunities for personal, professional, and financial growth through local and global career paths.
  • Long-term job stability backed by more than 100 years of success in the growing global mining industry.
