Founding Product Manager information

What is a founding product manager?

A Founding Product Manager is an early team member, often one of the first hires, responsible for shaping the product vision and strategy at a startup. They work closely with the founders to define the product roadmap, gather user feedback, and prioritize features to help achieve product-market fit. Unlike traditional product managers, Founding Product Managers often wear multiple hats, contributing to areas like user research, design, and even marketing. Their decisions can significantly influence the trajectory of the company, making this a highly impactful and entrepreneurial role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a founding product manager?

To thrive as a Founding Product Manager, you need strong product strategy, market analysis, and cross-functional leadership skills, typically backed by experience in product management or startup environments. Familiarity with tools like Jira, Figma, analytics platforms, and agile methodologies is commonly required. Exceptional communication, adaptability, and entrepreneurial mindset are vital soft skills for this role. These capabilities are crucial for driving early-stage product success, aligning diverse teams, and quickly iterating in dynamic startup settings.

What unique challenges can a founding product manager expect when building products in an early-stage startup?

As a Founding Product Manager, you’ll often face the challenge of working with limited resources and ambiguous requirements, as early-stage startups typically have evolving priorities and smaller teams. You’ll likely wear multiple hats, closely collaborating with founders, engineers, and designers to define the product vision and quickly iterate on feedback. This environment demands strong adaptability, proactive problem-solving, and a willingness to validate assumptions through rapid experimentation. Being comfortable with change and uncertainty is essential, but these challenges also offer the unique opportunity to shape the company’s product strategy and culture from the ground up.

Job description

This is a moment of change — and tremendous potential. Do you want to be part of building what's next in human-AI collaboration?

Sema4.ai is transforming how enterprises adopt AI by making intelligent agents practical, safe, and scalable for real business workflows. We’re solving hard technical problems at the intersection of LLMS, AI orchestration, enterprise systems integration, and production-grade reliability.

What you’ll experience:

Hard problems, real impact — Build systems that deliver measurable productivity and efficiency gains and bottom-line value for finance teams

Cutting-edge technology — Work at the frontier of Agentic AI, workflow orchestration, and enterprise-scale systems

Accelerate your career growth — Work with world-class teams on leading-edge technology, pioneering customers, and world-class colleagues

We’re a team of innovators in open source, big data, and automation-as-code. If you want to work on challenging technical problems with direct business impact alongside exceptional engineers and product builders, let’s talk.

The Opportunity

We are looking for a Founding Product Manager to set and execute the multi-quarter strategy for Sema4.ai’s AI finance agent portfolio. You’ll decide which finance workflows we automate, in what order, with what level of autonomy — and how the underlying agent primitives (Runbooks, Actions, Document Intelligence, evals) need to evolve to support them. You’ll be the senior product voice for finance agents internally and the face of the product externally with CFOs, controllers, and design partners.

This is a senior IC role with org-wide influence. You won’t have direct reports on day one, but you’ll set direction for the PMs, engineers, and applied AI folks working on adjacent surfaces, and you’ll be expected to raise the product bar across the entire org.

What You’ll Do

Primary Focus:

  • Shape the multi-quarter strategy and roadmap for AI finance agents, and own execution and delivery
  • Make the hard portfolio calls: where to go deep vs. broad, what to build vs. partner for, when an agent is good enough to ship vs. needs more rigorous evals.
  • Drive the underlying platform requirements (Runbooks, Actions, Document Intelligence, HITL, observability, evals) that finance agents need
  • Define the company-level quality bar for agents that touch the ledger: accuracy targets, SLAs, auditability, controls posture, rollback.
  • Partner with GTM leadership on positioning, packaging, and pricing for the finance portfolio; own the narrative we take to market.
  • Work closely with our design partner companies to understand gaps and opportunities, and drive these learnings back into the product
  • Raise the bar for how the broader product org thinks about agents
What You Bring Required Experience
  • 8+ years of product management experience, with a track record of shipping B2B SaaS or enterprise products at scale, including at least one product that materially moved business metrics.
  • Shipped AI/LLM-powered products in production and developed crisp opinions on evals, hallucination management, agent design, and the gap between flashy demos and customer-ready products.
  • Deep working knowledge of finance operations: you can hold a 90-minute working session with a controller about three-way match, period close, accruals, and SOX-relevant controls without losing the room.
  • Demonstrated influence beyond your direct scope — you’ve shaped roadmaps, platforms, or company strategy you didn’t formally own.
  • Technical fluency to debate agent architecture, prompt/tooling design, RAG, eval frameworks, and integration patterns (ERPs, doc stores, messaging) with senior engineers as peers.
  • Executive presence with customers: you can run the room with a CFO and walk out with their next-quarter use case committed.
  • Crisp written communication, sharp prioritization instincts, and a bias to ship — even when the data is incomplete.
Nice to have
  • Prior staff/principal PM experience at an AI-native company or AI-forward fintech
  • Time spent in-seat as a controller, FP&A leader, AP/AR director, or audit partner
  • Experience navigating enterprise procurement and security review at the SOC 2 / SOX / data-residency level.
How We Work
  • We move fast and value autonomy.
  • We have a bias for action.
  • We write to think and communicate clearly.
  • We build together, not in silos.
  • We respect each other.
  • We value execution over plans, and customer impact over internal consensus.
Why Sema4.ai
  • Mission and impact: Work at the forefront of applied AI, helping global enterprises transform how finance operates and how decisions get made.
  • Autonomy and ownership: Join a high-trust, high-impact environment where experienced builders own meaningful problems and ship quickly.
  • Learning and growth: Collaborate with a seasoned team of product, engineering, and go-to-market leaders who have scaled category-defining companies.
  • Flexible, people-first culture: Sema4.ai supports a modern, flexible work model that enables people to do their best work while balancing life outside of work.
  • Our founding team that has already “done it” before, with world-class investors.
Benefits
  • Ownership: We believe that hard work should be rewarded. That’s why we offer equity to all our employees. We want everyone to be part of the value we are creating.
  • Health benefits: Our benefits package includes medical, dental, and vision coverage, with a portion of premiums covered by the company.
  • Retirement: We offer a 401(k) pension plan with a matching contribution without age or service requirements.
  • Time off: We care about your well-being and fulfillment outside of work. You are encouraged to plan your time off based on your personal needs and workload.
  • Other perks: We reimburse you for annual wellbeing benefits of your choice. We also offer a work from home equipment allowance.
  • Tools for success: Top of the line equipment, access to training, courses, and the best AI tools in the market.
