Founding Full Stack Engineer information

What is a founding full stack engineer?

A Founding Full Stack Engineer is an early, core technical team member at a startup who is responsible for building both the front-end and back-end of the company's product. This role goes beyond typical engineering, often involving product decisions, architecture design, and collaborating directly with the founders. Founding Full Stack Engineers help shape the company's culture, technical direction, and can have significant equity stake. Their work is crucial in taking the business from idea to launch, often in a fast-paced, resource-limited environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a founding full stack engineer?

To thrive as a Founding Full Stack Engineer, you need expertise in both front-end and back-end development, deep knowledge of programming languages like JavaScript, Python, or Ruby, and experience with scalable architectures, often backed by a degree in computer science or equivalent experience. Familiarity with frameworks (React, Node.js, Django), version control systems (Git), cloud platforms (AWS, GCP), and DevOps practices is typically required. Strong problem-solving, initiative, adaptability, and excellent communication distinguish successful candidates, enabling effective collaboration in a startup environment. These skills and qualities are crucial for building robust products rapidly and influencing the company's technical direction from its early stages.

What is the difference between Founding Full Stack Engineer vs Full Stack Engineer?

AspectFounding Full Stack EngineerFull Stack Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires proven full stack development experience, sometimes with startup or early-stage company involvementRequires relevant full stack development skills, often with formal education or certifications
Work EnvironmentEarly-stage startups or founding teams, often wearing multiple hatsEstablished companies or startups, focused on project delivery
Employer & Industry UsageFounding teams, startups, tech entrepreneursTech companies, agencies, startups, corporate IT teams

Founding Full Stack Engineers are key players in early-stage startups, often involved in building core products from scratch and shaping company technology. Full Stack Engineers work across various company sizes, focusing on developing and maintaining applications. The main difference lies in the startup environment and level of involvement in founding the company.

What unique challenges might a founding full stack engineer face when joining an early-stage startup?

As a Founding Full Stack Engineer at an early-stage startup, you'll often balance building core product features with setting up foundational technical infrastructure. This role typically requires wearing multiple hats, from architecting systems and writing code to making critical technology decisions and collaborating closely with non-technical founders. You may encounter challenges such as ambiguous requirements, shifting priorities, and limited resources, but you'll also have significant influence over the company's technical direction. The dynamic environment encourages rapid learning and offers accelerated career growth, particularly for those who thrive in fast-paced, collaborative settings.

About Fulfillment IQ (FIQ):

Fulfillment IQ is a supply chain engineering and transformation company that helps brands, retailers, and 3PLs design, build, and scale high-performance logistics operations.

We work at the intersection of strategy, operations, and technology where we solve complex, real-world problems across warehouse design, automation, order management, transportation, and end-to-end supply chain execution.

Our teams combine deep domain expertise with strong technical capability, delivering outcomes through consulting, systems implementation, and proprietary platforms that accelerate time-to-value and reduce delivery risk.

If you enjoy working in complex environments, partnering closely with clients, and seeing your work make a tangible impact on how global commerce moves, this is the place where your skills and judgment truly come to life.

Role Overview

As a Full-Stack Engineer III, you will help build a new greenfield platform that turns FIQ's supply chain expertise into software our clients and teams rely on every day. You will own features end to end, building the React (Next.js) interfaces users work in along with the Python APIs and data flows behind them. Working alongside the founding engineer, product, and design, you will ship the screens, services, and workflows that move the platform from foundation to full capability.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Build user-facing features end to end across the React frontend and the API layer
  • Translate product requirements and designs into working, production-ready functionality
  • Design, implement, and integrate REST API endpoints with the UI
  • Build reusable, well-structured React components and views
  • Ensure application performance, responsiveness, and reliability
  • Write tests and contribute to shared engineering standards
  • Collaborate closely with backend engineers, product, and design
  • Participate in code review and technical discussion
  • Help shape frontend architecture and patterns as the platform grows

Must Have:

  • 4-6 years of experience building modern web applications, with a strong frontend focus
  • Strong hands-on experience with React and modern JavaScript
  • Working backend experience in any modern stack, such as .NET, Python, or Node.js
  • Experience designing and consuming REST APIs
  • Working knowledge of relational databases and SQL (PostgreSQL or similar)
  • Working knowledge of TypeScript
  • Ability to translate product requirements and designs into production-ready features
  • Strong engineering fundamentals across code quality, testing, and maintainability
  • Comfort operating in a fast-moving, early-stage environment with high ownership

Nice to Have:

  • Experience with AI-driven development and AI-assisted engineering workflows
  • Experience with LLM-integrated development, including RAG and retrieval-augmented patterns
  • Experience with FastAPI and SQLAlchemy
  • Experience building data-heavy interfaces such as dashboards, tables, or visualizations
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and cloud deployment
  • Experience contributing to greenfield or early-stage products
  • Exposure to logistics, supply chain, or data-intensive SaaS platforms

What Success Looks Like in the First 90 Days:

30 Days In

  • Ramp up on the codebase, technology stack, and product vision
  • Set up local development and deployment environments
  • Ship your first small features across the stack
  • Build working relationships across the team

60 Days In

  • Take ownership of a meaningful feature area
  • Deliver production features that span frontend and backend
  • Contribute to shared UI components and frontend patterns
  • Actively participate in technical design and code review

90 Days In

  • Independently own features from specification through production
  • Improve frontend architecture, standards, and reusability
  • Demonstrate consistent, measurable delivery velocity
  • Help raise the quality bar for the growing team

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):

  • Consistent delivery of production features across the full stack
  • Quality, performance, and reliability of the user-facing application
  • Code quality and test coverage
  • Velocity and throughput of shipped work
  • Effectiveness of collaboration with product, design, and engineering
