Founder Manager information

What is a founder manager?

Founder Managers are individuals who have both established a business (founders) and continue to oversee its day-to-day operations (managers). They are responsible for setting the company's vision, strategy, and culture, while also handling operational decisions and leading teams. This dual role requires a unique blend of entrepreneurial spirit and management skills. Founder Managers often wear many hats, from product development to fundraising and team leadership.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a founder manager?

To thrive as a Founder Manager, you need strong business acumen, strategic vision, and leadership skills, often backed by experience in entrepreneurship or business management. Familiarity with tools like project management software, financial modeling platforms, and CRM systems is common, and an MBA or relevant certifications can be beneficial. Exceptional communication, resilience, and adaptability help Founder Managers inspire teams and navigate uncertainty. These abilities are crucial for driving organizational growth, fostering innovation, and ensuring long-term business sustainability.

What are some common challenges founder managers face when transitioning from startup growth to scaling operations?

Founder Managers often encounter challenges in shifting from hands-on involvement to delegating tasks and building scalable processes. As the company grows, they need to establish efficient systems, hire and onboard new team members, and develop leadership skills to manage larger teams. Balancing strategic vision with day-to-day operations can be demanding, and learning to trust others with key decisions is essential for continued growth. Effective communication, adaptability, and a willingness to evolve leadership style are crucial during this phase.

The successful candidate will serve as a trusted confidant and business partner who understands leadership priorities, anticipates needs, protects time, and ensures consistent follow-through across a fast-paced and growing business. The ideal candidate will be highly proactive, resourceful, discreet, and comfortable operating independently, including when the executives are traveling extensively. • Comprehensive benefits package
  • High-visibility role supporting a senior executive
  • Opportunity to join a growing national organization with a global presence
Responsibilities:
  1. 1. Executive Calendar and Priority Management (25%) Manage a complex and frequently changing executive calendar, including meetings, travel, business commitments, and selected personal priorities. Protect the Managing Partnerโ€™s time by evaluating requests, resolving conflicts, and maintaining focus on the highest-priority activities. Coordinate business and family calendars to ensure important commitments are appropriately planned and protected. Develop a strong understanding of executive preferences, business priorities, key clients, and internal stakeholders to effectively manage scheduling and competing demands. Ensure important emails, calls, commitments, and contractual deadlines receive timely attention and follow-through.
  2. 2. Travel, Meeting, and Event Coordination (25%) Coordinate complex domestic and occasional international travel, including complete itineraries and related logistics. Ensure executives are fully prepared for travel and meetings with the appropriate materials, background information, presentations, and schedules. Plan and coordinate executive meetings, off-sites, client events, business dinners, and team gatherings. Provide occasional travel support for off-site team meetings or events as needed; routine travel alongside the executives is not expected.

Draft and coordinate correspondence, presentations, reports, and other executive materials. Communicate confidently and professionally with C-suite leaders, clients, partners, and external stakeholders while maintaining strong relationships across all levels of the organization. Maintain strict confidentiality regarding business strategy, contracts, personnel matters, financial information, and personal matters.
  4. 4. Meeting Preparation and Follow-Through (15%) Prepare agendas, briefing materials, presentations, and supporting documents for internal and external meetings. Attend selected meetings to capture decisions, commitments, and action items. Track deliverables and proactively follow up with stakeholders to ensure timely completion. Help establish systems and processes that improve communication, accountability, organization, and workflow.
  5. 5. Administrative and Operational Support (15%) Prepare and submit expense reports and complete other executive administrative responsibilities. Support the review and routing of contracts, ensuring appropriate approvals and deadlines are addressed before signature. Provide selected personal and family-related support, including scheduling appointments, coordinating personal travel, and assisting with other logistics that enable the Managing Partner to remain focused while traveling. Provide secondary coordination and administrative support to another Partner and collaborate with the broader team as needed. Assist with special projects and changing business priorities.
Requirements:
  • 5โ€“10 years of progressive executive support experience.
  • Experience supporting a CEO, founder, managing partner, or similarly fast-paced senior executive is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex calendars, executive travel, communications, meetings, and competing priorities.
  • Proven ability to operate independently and maintain seamless workflow while executives are traveling or working remotely.
  • Experience serving as a proactive executive business partner rather than solely providing task-based administrative support.
  • Experience managing or monitoring executive communications and prioritizing time-sensitive matters.
  • Proficiency with modern productivity, scheduling, and organizational tools, including Microsoft 365 and/or Google Workspace.
  • Exceptional judgment, discretion, organization, and attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including comfort interacting with C-suite executives and other senior stakeholders.
  • Ability to assess urgency, make sound decisions, and work independently with limited direction.
  • Confidence to provide thoughtful recommendations and respectfully push back when appropriate.
  • Calm, adaptable, and solutions-oriented approach in a fast-moving environment.
  • Ability to work onsite in the Reno office.
  • Flexibility to provide occasional support outside traditional business hours and travel periodically for team meetings or events.
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in business administration, communications, management, or a related field preferred.
