What is a forward deployment engineer?

Forward Deployment Engineers (FDEs) are technical professionals who work directly with clients to implement, customize, and deploy software solutions. They act as a bridge between engineering teams and customers, ensuring that products are successfully integrated into the client's environment and tailored to meet their specific needs. FDEs typically handle a mix of software engineering, problem-solving, and client-facing responsibilities, often traveling to customer sites to provide on-the-ground support. Their role is essential for organizations that offer complex technical products requiring hands-on deployment and adaptation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a forward deployment engineer?

To thrive as a Forward Deployment Engineer, you need strong analytical and problem-solving skills, a solid foundation in computer science or engineering, and relevant experience or a degree in these fields. Familiarity with programming languages (such as Python or Java), cloud platforms, and deployment/configuration management tools is typically required, along with knowledge of client-facing software solutions. Outstanding communication, adaptability, and teamwork skills help you understand client needs and collaborate effectively across teams. These skills ensure successful implementation and integration of complex software solutions in diverse client environments.

How does a forward deployment engineer typically collaborate with clients and internal teams during a project?

Forward Deployment Engineers often serve as a bridge between clients and internal engineering or product teams. They work closely with clients to understand their unique requirements, configure solutions, and ensure successful deployments, frequently traveling to client sites. Internally, they collaborate with engineers, product managers, and support staff to relay client feedback, troubleshoot issues, and optimize system performance. This role requires excellent communication skills and adaptability, as each project may involve different stakeholders and technical challenges.

What is the difference between Forward Deployment Engineer vs Network Engineer?

AspectForward Deployment EngineerNetwork Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in CS, EE, or related; certifications like CCNA, Cisco, or cloud certificationsBachelor's in CS, EE, or related; certifications like CCNA, CompTIA Network+
Work EnvironmentOn-site deployments, fieldwork, client sites, and data centersOffice-based, network infrastructure setup, maintenance, and troubleshooting
Industry UsageTech, telecom, cloud providers, hardware vendorsIT, telecom, enterprise networks, service providers

While both roles require networking knowledge and certifications like CCNA, Forward Deployment Engineers focus on deploying and supporting hardware and systems directly at client sites, often involving fieldwork. Network Engineers primarily design, implement, and maintain network infrastructure within organizations. The roles overlap in certifications and industry usage but differ in work environment and deployment focus.

What do forward deployment engineers do?

Forward deployment engineers are responsible for deploying, maintaining, and troubleshooting hardware and software systems at client sites or in the field. They often work closely with customers to ensure systems operate effectively and may require skills in networking, scripting, and technical support. Their role involves on-site presence, rapid problem resolution, and ensuring operational readiness of deployed solutions.

Job description

Forward Deployed Engineer

We are building Reflow, a workforce and workflow intelligence platform that helps teams improve performance through a deep understanding of how work actually happens. Customers get excited after the first demo. Forward Deployed Engineers turn that excitement into adoption, retention, and growth. This is a technical, customerโ€‘facing role at the intersection of customer success, engineering, product, and goโ€‘toโ€‘market.

  • Own the customer journey: Setup, onboarding, adoption, and longโ€‘term success.
  • Shorten timeโ€‘toโ€‘value: Move customers from demo to value quickly.
  • Work handsโ€‘on with customers to configure Reflow for their realโ€‘life use cases and turn their data into meaningful information to help them dataโ€‘driven business decisions.
  • Build integrations, data pipelines, prototypes, and proofs of value for strategic customers.
  • Debug data issues, model behavior, and system performance in live customer environments.
  • Capture and structure customer feedback: Be the voice of the user in product and engineering decisions.
  • Partner with product and engineering to surface technical gaps, edge cases, and feature opportunities.
  • Assist the contract process with new partners, working closely with our legal team to keep things smooth and fast.
  • Build strong relationships that lead to expansions and renewals.
  • Create and refine the playbook: Onboarding processes, success metrics, touchpoints.

Who you are:

  • Entrepreneurial: Former founder, early employee of a startup, or operator who thrives in ambiguity.
  • Technical background with handsโ€‘on experience in engineering, data, or systems roles.
  • Comfortable writing code, working with APIs, data pipelines, and production systems.
  • Able to move between customer conversations and technical implementation without losing momentum.
  • Curious and analytical. You dig into workflows, systems, and data to uncover root causes.
  • Sharp communicator: Written, verbal, and human.
  • Methodical: You keep yourself, your customers, and your teammates on track by creating clear templates and playbooks.

Bonus Points:

  • Experience as a Forward Deployed Engineer, Solutions Engineer, Customer Success, or earlyโ€‘stage startup engineer.
  • Background in B2B SaaS, enterprise software, or dataโ€‘heavy products.
  • Familiarity with analytics platforms, BI tools, workflow systems, or automation software.
  • Experience supporting enterprise customers through security, data access, or compliance reviews.
  • Be an early, highโ€‘impact hire working directly with the founders and founding team.
  • Shape how Reflow is deployed, adopted, and extended in the real world.
  • Influence product direction by bringing real customer systems and constraints into engineering decisions.
  • Build, deploy, learn and repeat.

Weโ€™re open to you starting partโ€‘time and evolving into fullโ€‘time (contract or W2).

Benefits:

  • Paid Time Off (PTO)
  • Health Insurance
  • Vision Insurance
Windows App Developer
  • Lead Windows app development with a focus on performance, maintainability, and crossโ€‘environment stability.
  • Profile, debug, and optimize for speed, memory usage, and reliability.
  • Build for managed and restricted enterprise environments using MDM tools and deployment best practices.
  • Integrate with backend APIs, and optionally, implement or adjust backend endpoints when needed.
  • Collaborate with other developers to ensure consistent experiences across platforms.
  • Contribute to app architecture, testing, and release processes to ensure smooth updates and deployments.

Who you are:

  • Proficient in C# with handsโ€‘on experience in Windows app development (Avalonia UI, WPF, UWP, or WinUI).
  • Skilled at profiling, debugging, and performance optimization.
  • Experienced in enterpriseโ€‘managed or MDMโ€‘deployed app environments.

Youโ€™ll build the backbone of Reflowโ€™s intelligence layer, the systems that make our data usable, fast, and insightful. Youโ€™ll work directly with founders and engineers across analytics, infrastructure, and product. This is a highโ€‘impact technical role that sits at the intersection of scale, performance, and strategy.

Weโ€™re open to part or fullโ€‘time. Ideal for builders who care about performance and precision at scale.
