How much do fortran jobs pay per year?
Is Fortran still in demand?
What jobs use Fortran?
What is a Fortran?
A Fortran job typically involves programming, maintaining, and optimizing software written in Fortran, a high-performance computing language used in scientific computing, engineering, and numerical analysis. Professionals working in Fortran may develop simulations, data models, or computational algorithms for fields like meteorology, physics, and finance. These roles often require expertise in legacy code, debugging, and performance optimization on modern computing architectures.
Are Fortran programmers in demand?
What types of projects do Fortran developers typically work on, and what is a typical work environment like?
Fortran Developers often work on projects in scientific research, engineering simulations, numerical analysis, and high-performance computing—such as climate modeling, physics simulations, or computational fluid dynamics. The work environment may range from academic research labs and government agencies to private sector industries like aerospace or energy. Typically, you’ll collaborate with scientists, engineers, and other developers to maintain and enhance complex software systems. Many positions encourage teamwork and ongoing learning, offering opportunities to modernize legacy code and contribute to cutting-edge computational solutions.
What skills and qualifications are needed for a Fortran position?
To thrive as a Fortran Developer, you need strong proficiency in Fortran programming, scientific computing concepts, and a relevant degree in computer science, mathematics, engineering, or a related field. Experience with legacy codebases, version control systems like Git, and familiarity with parallel computing frameworks are commonly required. Problem-solving skills, analytical thinking, and effective communication are valuable soft skills for collaborating with diverse technical teams. These abilities ensure you can maintain and update high-performance scientific applications, adapt to evolving requirements, and work productively within multidisciplinary environments.

You will support Code 34 Radar In-Service Engineering Agency (ISEA) Team. Tasking will include analysis, design and capability enhancements, testing support, and in-service support for new and fielded Radar Systems.
The physicist will perform scientific analysis and computational modeling to evaluate fratricide, normal, hostile, and intrinsic radiation environments and their effect on other Navy systems, as well as on personnel. The successful candidate will perform a wide range of tasks spanning radiation transport calculations, Hardening and Vulnerability (H&V) calculations, Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) calculations, hostile nuclear environment definition, and planning and assessment of radiation/electrical/mechanical testing. Position will require the use of scientific and engineering simulation software, as well as object-oriented programming languages (e.g., C++, Python, etc.).
This position will be responsible for the following:
- Assist the customer in system planning, requirement definition, assessment, and qualification of current and future Navy Radar systems.
- Develop technical documentation and briefings.
- Develop and maintain software code as deliverables to the Navy.
- Develop technical reports capturing assumptions, inputs, outputs, and results.
- Develop and deliver presentations.
- Interface directly with the customer.
- Travel (10% of the time) for meetings and customer interactions as required.
- Contribute to team efforts in the completion of fratricide, normal, hostile, and intrinsic environment studies of applicable systems.
- Perform radiation transport calculations of free-field and internal dose levels in Navy systems.
- Compare and correlate radiation modeling results with experimental data.
- Perform Verification & Validation of simulation models and results.
- Assist in test planning and execution at radiation, electrical, and mechanical above ground test facilities.
- Work with software engineers to implement physics-based analysis models into maintainable software programs.
Qualifications
Required:
- Minimum requirement is a BS Degree in Physics or Nuclear Engineering (or other related STEM fields)
- BS and 2-4 years experience or MS and 0-2 years experience
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance.
- Experience in experimental design, execution, and modeling.
- Experience choosing and applying physical models in the formal analysis of physical systems.
- Experience in writing technical reports or articles.
- Experience presenting results to technical SMEs and government customers of various backgrounds and education levels.
Desired:
- Radiation transport experience (neutron, photon, electron)
- Experience with any of the following computational tools: C++, Fortran, or Python, MCNP, Attila.
- Ability to create unique code-to-code interfaces along with post processing routines for model response analyses.
- Ability to lead a team of motivated and highly skilled engineers and scientists.
- Experience with industry leading verification and validation practices, model uncertainty quantification, industry standard design of experiment processes, and application of statistical analysis of experimental data.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative and manage detailed tasks.
- Comfortable working independently or on a team.
- Knowledge of object-oriented design.
- Experience with strategic weapon systems.
