What types of projects or industries commonly employ Fortran Programmers?

Fortran Programmers are frequently employed in industries that rely heavily on scientific computing and mathematical modeling, such as aerospace, meteorology, engineering, finance, and research institutions. Typical projects include developing or maintaining simulations, numerical analysis tools, or legacy applications in areas like fluid dynamics, climate modeling, or quantitative analysis. Daily work often involves collaborating with scientists, engineers, or researchers to ensure software accuracy and performance. Although some roles are independent, many positions are part of multidisciplinary teams working to solve complex technical challenges. Opportunities for career advancement include moving into lead programmer, software architect, or technical specialist roles within scientific and engineering organizations.

Does anyone program in Fortran?

Fortran programmers are employed mainly in scientific, engineering, and high-performance computing fields where legacy code and numerical computation are common. Proficiency in Fortran, along with knowledge of scientific libraries and debugging skills, is often required for these specialized roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Fortran Programmer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fortran Programmer, you need strong proficiency in Fortran programming, mathematical or scientific problem-solving skills, and typically a degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with legacy codebases, numerical libraries, version control, and high-performance computing platforms is common, and some positions may prefer certifications in scientific computing or experience with parallel processing tools. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and good communication skills are valuable soft skills for maintaining and updating legacy systems while collaborating with interdisciplinary teams. These skills ensure efficient code maintenance, successful modernization of existing applications, and effective team integration in technical and research-driven environments.

What is a Fortran Programmer job?

A Fortran Programmer is a software developer who specializes in writing, maintaining, and optimizing code using the Fortran programming language. Fortran is widely used in scientific computing, engineering simulations, and high-performance computing applications. These programmers work with legacy code, develop new algorithms, and ensure computational efficiency in fields like physics, meteorology, and aerospace. They may also translate older Fortran programs into newer versions or integrate them with modern technologies.

Is there a demand for Fortran programmers?

Fortran programmers are in demand primarily in industries such as scientific computing, aerospace, and high-performance computing, where legacy code and specialized applications are common. While the overall demand is smaller compared to other programming languages, expertise in Fortran remains valuable for maintaining and developing complex numerical and scientific software, often requiring knowledge of parallel computing and numerical methods.

Is Fortran programming still used?

Fortran programming is still used in scientific, engineering, and high-performance computing fields where legacy code and numerical computation are prevalent. While its popularity has declined for general software development, specialized industries continue to rely on Fortran for performance-critical applications and simulations.

How much does a Fortran programmer make?

The average salary for a Fortran programmer varies depending on experience, location, and industry, but typically ranges from $70,000 to $110,000 annually. Skilled programmers with expertise in scientific computing, legacy systems, or specialized tools may earn higher salaries, especially in research or engineering environments.

Job description

Job ID: 732172BR Date posted: Jun. 16, 2026
Description:At Lockheed Martin we keep people safe and solve the world's most complex challenges. Our people are some of the greatest minds in the industry and truly make Lockheed Martin a great place to work. With our employees as our priority, we provide career opportunities designed to propel development and boost agility. Our flexible schedules, competitive pay, and comprehensive benefits enable our employees to live a healthy, fulfilling life at and outside of work. This is a place for engineers, scientists, and problem-solvers who are ready to engage deeply, think critically, and build with purpose. You will not just launch a career. You will be part of something bigger. This is where the best are built.
You will be a Thermodynamics Engineer - Level 1 for the Flight Sciences group, which is responsible for advancing Aerodynamics, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Wind Tunnel Testing, Thermodynamics, Performance, Stability & Control, and Acoustics within Lockheed Martin Aeronautics.
Job Scope:
As a Thermodynamics Engineer (Level 1) you will join the Advanced Development Programs (ADP) line of business, as well as providing support for the C-130J transport aircraft family and its derivatives as part of the Air Mobility and Maritime Missions (AMMM) line of business. Working under senior thermodynamics leads, you will perform a variety of component-level and vehicle-level heat transfer and thermodynamic analyses, including support for occasional laboratory tests, and building and executing heat transfer models which will drive design decisions and performance assessments.
Responsibilities:
The engineer will apply the basics of heat transfer and thermodynamics to build and execute models to estimate transient and steady-state temperature distributions for aircraft and their systems across a range of operating conditions. These models range from quick scripts or spreadsheet computations in MATLAB or Microsoft Excel to finite element models of coupled conduction, convection, and radiation in Siemens Simcenter 3D. These models will be constructed in close collaboration with the aerodynamic, CFD, structural, stress, propulsion, and systems teams, and the output will be used to inform material selection, system layout, and component selection. The engineer will document the modeling process in line with Lockheed Martin engineering standards, and will engage in training, workshops, and continuous learning activities to remain current with emerging heat transfer technologies and analysis practices.
What's In It For You:
We are committed to supporting your worklife balance and overall wellbeing, offering flexible scheduling options. Learn more about Lockheed Martin's comprehensive benefits package here. Do you want to be part of a company culture that empowers employees to think big, lead with a growth mindset, and make the impossible a reality? We provide the resources and give you the flexibility to enable inspiration and focus - if you have the passion and courage to pursue ambitious goals, work hard, and have fun doing what you love then we want to build a better tomorrow with you.
Who You Are:
You are a self-starter with exceptional communication and technical writing skills. You thrive in a dynamic environment, engage as a collaborative team player, and build strong working relationships across disciplines. Your analytical mindset and attention to detail enable you to tackle complex stability and controls challenges and drive innovative solutions.
