JOB SUMMARY

Under the general direction of the Director of Nursing (Care Center), the Assistant Director of Nursing manages supervisory Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Certified Nurse Assistants, and nursing support personnel. In this role the Assistant Director of Nursing Care Center compliments the Director of Nursing in planning, developing, and supervising the activities of licensed and non-licensed personnel who provide health care and nursing services to Care Center residents. The Director of Nursing provide scope is weighted heavily in Regulatory Compliance. The Assistant Director of Nursing Care Center may be responsible for ensuring all shifts are adequately staffed and may have to supervise on weekends. As an Assistant Director of Nursing, incumbent may work with the Director to identify and resolve departmental deficiencies with implemented correction plans. Incumbent may identify and address any quality-assurance auditing issues. Assistant Director of Nursing Care Center may assist with making rounds during patient checks. This position also aids in coordinating nursing services programs within the department, reviews staff performance and ensures state standards of quality care are adhered to. The Assistant Director of Nursing may also monitor nursing cost center budgets and ensure the department is functioning in accordance with JCAHO, federal, state, and local guidelines, organizational and departmental policies, and procedures.

STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE


  1. Assist the DON with management responsibilities and in maintaining quality of care.
  2. Oversees the clinical operations (i.e. monitoring resident conditions, psychopharmacological drugs, restraint use, Foley catheters, pressure ulcers, etc.) of the Care Center.ย 
  3. Participate in Facility surveys (inspections) made by authorized government agencies and TJC as requested by the Administrator or the Director.
  4. Ensures that reference material (i.e., PDR'S, regulations, professional standards of practice, etc.) maintained at the nurses' stations are current. Recommend to the Director written material that will assist the nursing service department in meeting the day-to-day needs of residents.
  5. Assist in developing methods for coordinating nursing services with other resident services to ensure the continuity of the residents' total regimen of care.
  6. Monitors and reviews patient/resident incidents to identify possible legal issues and to identify patterns that might require preventive intervention.
  7. Responsible for Staff Education, monthly staff meetings, assuring all nursing staff attends required training, and will serve as the Infection Control Officer.
  8. Records and reports statistics for all facility wounds, pressure ulcers, vascular and stasis ulcers.
  9. Delegates to RNs, LPNs, and Nurse Supervisors the administrative authority, responsibility, and accountability necessary to perform their assigned duties.
  10. Ensures that direct nursing care be provided by a licensed nurse, a certified nursing assistant and/or a nurse aide qualified to perform the procedure.
  11. Reviews nurses' notes to ensure that they are informative and descriptive of the nursing care being provided, that they reflect the resident's response to the care, and that such care is provided in accordance with the resident's wishes.
  12. Reports and investigates medication errors to the Director.
  13. Provides leadership training that includes the administrative and supervisory principles essential for Nurse Supervisors, RNs, and LPNs.
  14. Conducts and evaluates retraining and refresher training for all nursing staff, as needed.
  15. Makes daily rounds of the nursing service department to ensure that all nursing service personnel are performing their work assignments in accordance with acceptable nursing standards. Report findings to the Director.
  16. Reviews complaints and grievances made or filed by department personnel. Make appropriate reports to the Director as required or as may be necessary.
  17. Ensures that departmental disciplinary action is administered fairly and without regard to race, color, creed, national origin, age, sex, sexual orientation, religion, handicap, or marital status in accordance with all applicable state laws.
  18. Assists the Director of Nursing in ensuring that residents are free from abuse, mistreatment and neglect.ย 
  19. Assists with compliance and ensure effective communication with all levels of care center staff
  20. Meets the nursing medical needs of all residents.
  21. Coordinates and direct the total planning for nursing services.
  22. Maintains a comprehensive knowledge of general nursing theory and practice.
  23. Responsible for the accurate and timely completion of medical records.
  24. Consults, plans and works with Director of Nursing and Administrator in policy formulation and programmatic development and implementation.
  25. Coordinates with the Director of Nursing and Administrator planning activities to develop administrative policies and practices for the company.ย 
  26. Consults with supervisors' and staff, individually or in groups, regarding patients or families, special programs or service programs.ย 
  27. Directs the implementation of service goals and objectives.ย 
  28. Develops standards that ensure safe and effective services to clients and families.
  29. Establishes job functions, qualifications, job descriptions and competency for each service staff indirect and supervisory.
  30. Establishes and maintains effective channels of communication.
  31. Consults with Medical Provider in matters relating to patient care services.ย 
  32. Evaluates own job performance and utilization of resources in planning for professional growth.ย 
  33. Participates in state and national organizations, meetings, seminars, workshops and activities.ย ย 
  34. Assists with interviews and hires Care Center personnel.ย 
  35. Actively develops and pursues referral sources, as well as facilitates on-going relationships with various medical and health communities.
  36. Keeps current on local area issues and works with organizations that work to improve the health and welfare of the community, as directed by the Director of Nursing, Administrator and Executive Director.ย 
  37. Performs administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies, charting, etc., as necessary.
  38. Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Nursing and the Administrator.


Requirements

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Level of Education: High School Diploma is required. Prefer a bachelor's degree in Nursing or a combination of education and experience in Long-term Care.


Formal Training: Management skills with experience in planning, organizing, implementing, facilitating, interviewing, counseling, and verbal and written communications. Excellent computer skills are required including strong knowledge of Word, Excel, and Outlook.


Licensure, Certification, Registration: Must have and maintain an unencumbered LPN or RN in the State of Georgia, must have, and maintain certification in BLSCPR.


Work Experience: At least Two years working knowledge of Long-term care environment and experience in a supervisory or management capacity.ย ย
