FORESTRY TECHNICIAN (PERMANENT INTERMITTENT) - SONOMA-MENDOCINO COAST DISTRICT/ MENDOCINO SECTOR/ RUSSIAN GULCH DISTRICT HEADQUARTERS
Under the close supervision of the Senior Environmental Scientist, incumbents will perform routine technical resource management assignments of average difficulty. Incumbents will perform basic fire control assignments during fire season and occasionally at other times. Incumbents entering State service at this level will receive in a timely manner during the probationary period, and prior to working in emergency assignments, training in the Department's "Basic Fire Fighter" training as is required for Fire Fighter II. Incumbents may receive additional training, as required, to perform their assigned functions, in such areas as introduction to surveying, map reading, cruising, dendrology, and basic program areas. Tasks will further Natural Resources Program projects and programs as identified by the Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory), in support of District Wildfire and Forest Resilience Program. The reporting location is Russian Gulch District Office located at 12301 North Highway 1, Mendocino, CA 95460.
This position may work up to 1500 hours in any calendar year.
The selected candidate is required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting prior to appointment.

Special Requirement/Condition of Employment: Depending on the assigned location, the incumbent may be required to occupy state-owned housing to meet operational needs, or may be offered state-owned housing if available. Housing assignments will be determined in accordance with Department policy, operational priorities, and applicable labor agreements.

Working Conditions
Lifts and carries heavy loads while performing field operations in rugged terrain and under varying environmental conditions. Exposure to poison oak and wildlife, exposure to smoke and fire during burning operations, and exposure to sun, wind, and other weather conditions.

Employee must attend (at employers' expense) and pass Basic Firefighter training within 12 months of hire and must pass, within 1 month, the fire community's standardized Moderate Pack Test (Requirements: 2-mile walk with 25 lb pack in 30 minutes. No jogging or running).
An incumbent who does not yet possess Northern Spotted Owl or Marbled Murrelet survey training and qualifications must attend appropriate trainings and become successfully permitted to conduct protocol level surveys.
