Job description

General Description An employee in this title performs skilled tree maintenance tasks which require operating heavy equipment and using a variety of power and hand tools. The incumbent receives specific instructions from the Senior Forestry Worker or other higher level supervisory personnel regarding daily assignments. Work is performed in all types of weather conditions, including the most severe.

Employee is required to respond to emergency conditions during unscheduled hours. Related work is performed as required. CITY RESIDENCY WILL BE REQUIRED WITHIN ONE YEAR OF HIRE.

Typical Work Activities Performs skilled tree maintenance such as planting, cabling, bracing, bolting, spraying, pruning, and removing trees; Identifies tree maintenance needs in the field and refers them to supervisor; Operates and maintains heavy equipment; Climbs trees using saddle and rope; Identifies pests, disease, and structural hazards in trees and reports these to the supervisor; Responds to questions related to forestry and other City services while performing work in the field; Performs required preventive maintenance for assigned vehicles and equipment; Performs miscellaneous tasks requiring use of aerial lift truck. Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or G.E.D. AND I

A. Associate's degree in Forestry or a closely related field; AND I. B.

One (1) year of tree maintenance experience which must include performing the following tasks: Operating and working from aerial lift trucks; Tree climbing, using saddle and rope; Trimming and removing large trees including stumps. OR II. Two (2) years of experience as described in I-B; OR III.

Possession of a Tree Worker Certification issued by the International Society of Arboriculture; OR IV. Successful completion of the City of Rochester's Forestry Worker Trainee program. SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: 1.

Valid NYS Class D driver's license at time of appointment. 2. Valid Commercial Driver's License (NYS Class B), without airbrake restrictions, within six (6) months after date of appointment.
