Overview

Responsibilities
  • A RN Forensic/Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) is a registered nurse who has completed additional training and education set forth by the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN)
  • Provides timely, compassionate, trauma informed care to victims of sexual violence
  • Perform medical forensic exams, as clinically indicated and inside jurisdictional policies, for pediatric, adolescent, and adult patients; perform timely written and verbal reports to agencies
  • Work with outpatient clinic services (physician practices) and community agencies to develop trauma-informed medical follow-up for pediatric, adolescent, and adult populations
  • Hold 24-hour accountability for the operation of the program across three (3) USA Health sites (Emergency and Inpatient Services): University Hospital, University of South Alabama Children's & Women's Hospital, and the Freestanding ED
  • Maintain standards of practice according to Forensic Nursing Scope and Standard of Practice, International Association of Forensic Nursing (IAFN), and U.S. Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women Protocols for Intimate Partner Violence, SANE-P, and SANE-A
  • Collects a medical history and account of the assault from the patient
  • Assesses the patient’s condition and performs medical forensic examination as clinically indicated and inside jurisdictional policies for pediatric, adolescent, and adult patients
  • Maintains standards of practice according to Forensic Nursing Scope and Standard of Practice, International Association of Forensic Nursing (IAFN), and U.S. Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women Protocols for Intimate Partner Violence, SANE-P, and SANE-A medical forensic examinations
  • Collects and preserves all evidence such as relevant specimens and photo documentation and documents the findings
  • Provides direct nursing care of prophylactic treatment of sexually transmitted infections and pregnancy and makes appropriate referrals for continued care
  • Provides timely verbal and written reports to relevant agencies
  • Reports to law enforcement in a manner that promotes informed decisions and provides expert testimony when needed in court for trials
  • Maintains all relevant certifications and licensure(s) for forensic nursing clinical practice
  • Completes all mandatory department, educational and hospital requirements
  • Adheres to current Infection Control and Safety Standards
  • Regular and prompt attendance
  • Ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required
  • Related duties as assigned

Additional Information

Employees must be in a regular position, working 20 hours or more per week (.50 FTE or greater) to qualify for benefits.
