Shift: Monday–Friday (Flexible Schedule Available)
Duration: 6 Months with Potential Extension or State Hire
Hour/week: 40 hours/week
Patient Population: Adult Psychiatric / Forensic Population
Position Summary
We are seeking a Board-Certified or Board-Eligible Psychiatrist (MD/DO) to provide comprehensive psychiatric care within a state-operated hospital facility in Indiana. The Psychiatrist will be responsible for patient evaluations, diagnosis, treatment planning, medication management, and clinical leadership. This role requires collaboration with a multidisciplinary healthcare team to support recovery-focused treatment and ensure the delivery of high-quality psychiatric services.
The ideal candidate will have experience working with complex psychiatric populations, strong clinical judgment, and the ability to provide leadership in treatment planning and patient care.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, assessments, and diagnostic reviews.
Diagnose mental health conditions by analyzing patient histories, clinical data, and test findings.
Develop, implement, and oversee individualized treatment plans.
Prescribe and manage psychiatric medications and monitor treatment effectiveness.
Provide patient and family education regarding diagnoses, treatment options, and recovery goals.
Serve as a clinical leader on interdisciplinary treatment teams.
Collaborate with psychologists, social workers, psychiatric nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals regarding patient care.
Provide clinical direction and recommendations for complex psychiatric cases.
Review treatment plans, diagnostic evaluations, and patient progress.
Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation in accordance with facility policies and professional standards.
Participate in hospital committees, quality improvement initiatives, and program development activities.
Provide guidance and supervision to medical trainees, students, and other clinical staff as assigned.
Apply evidence-based psychiatric practices while maintaining compliance with medical staff bylaws, state regulations, and ethical standards.
Required Qualifications
MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.
Board Certification or Board Eligibility in General Psychiatry.
Completion of an accredited Psychiatry Residency Program.
Active, unrestricted Indiana Medical License.
Current CPR Certification.
Minimum 3 years of experience in:
Collaborating with multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
Leading treatment planning and providing clinical direction.
Evaluating patient data and diagnosing psychiatric disorders.
Managing high-pressure situations and utilizing de-escalation techniques.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous experience working in a state psychiatric hospital setting.
Experience treating adult psychiatric and forensic populations.
Experience with Cerner EMR.
Experience managing patients with severe and persistent mental illness (SPMI).
Knowledge & Skills
Advanced knowledge of psychiatric diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation principles.
Strong understanding of human behavior, psychological assessment, and evidence-based interventions.
Ability to analyze complex clinical information and make sound medical decisions.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to build effective professional relationships with patients, families, and healthcare teams.
Strong leadership and clinical decision-making abilities.
Work Environment
State-operated hospital setting with adult psychiatric and forensic patients.
Requires a high level of clinical judgment, awareness, and safety consideration.
May involve responding to urgent patient situations requiring immediate intervention.
Position requires extended periods of sitting, walking, and occasional physical activity to assist with patient safety and care.
Schedule & Assignment Details
Full-time, on-site position (40 hours/week).
Monday–Friday schedule with some flexibility.
No required on-call or weekend coverage; optional opportunities may be available.
Caseload includes responsibility for 2–15 bed psychiatric units.
Initial orientation period:
Week 1: General hospital orientation.
Week 2: Department-specific orientation.
Additional mentorship before independent practice.
Assignment duration: 6 months with potential extension or transition to a state position.
