What does a forensic lab assistant do?

A Forensic Lab Assistant supports scientists and forensic analysts by preparing and organizing laboratory equipment, handling evidence, and assisting with various tests and analyses. They ensure that samples are properly labeled and documented, help maintain a clean and safe laboratory environment, and may be involved in basic data entry or record-keeping. Their work is crucial for maintaining the chain of custody and ensuring the integrity of evidence used in criminal investigations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a forensic lab assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Forensic Lab Assistant, you need a solid background in biology, chemistry, or forensic science, typically supported by a relevant associate or bachelor’s degree. Familiarity with laboratory equipment, evidence handling protocols, and data management systems is essential. Attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team are valuable soft skills. These competencies ensure accurate evidence processing, maintain chain of custody, and support the integrity of legal investigations.

What are some common challenges faced by forensic lab assistants when handling evidence?

Forensic Lab Assistants often face challenges such as ensuring the chain of custody for evidence, preventing contamination, and adhering to strict laboratory protocols. This requires meticulous attention to detail, as even small errors can compromise the integrity of an investigation. Additionally, assistants must be comfortable working with potentially hazardous materials and be prepared to manage time effectively, as case priorities can shift rapidly in a forensic lab environment.

Position Overview

Are you ready to move beyond the drafting table and into a role where your designs are physically prototyped, tested, and deployed for missions of national security? We are seeking a Mid-Level Mechanical Engineer to join our Specialized Design team—a high-impact group dedicated to solving the most complex infrastructure challenges for a select group of confidential clients. This isn't just about HVAC load calcs; it’s about "cradle-to-grave" engineering where you take ownership of the entire lifecycle, from initial concept and CFD modeling to hands-on fabrication and field implementation.

Joining our team means stepping into a culture that breathes creativity and values technical integrity above all else. You will work in a fast-paced, broad-spectrum environment where one day involves designing satellite command-and-control cooling systems and the next involves forensic analysis of COTS power systems in a lab setting. For an engineer who craves variety and the satisfaction of knowing their work protects and enriches America’s security, this is the ultimate platform for professional growth and legacy-building.

Core Responsibilities

  • End-to-End Design Engineering: Lead and assist in the full design process including HVAC load calculations, system sizing, equipment selection, and the development of 2D/3D CAD drawing packages.

  • Technical Innovation & Research: Research cutting-edge HVAC technologies and evaluate mechanical products to meet specialized requirements for feasibility, cost, and maintenance.

  • Hands-on Fabrication & Testing: Transition designs from the screen to the shop by implementing hands-on fabrication, designing test control apparatus, and developing procedures for product testing.

  • Project Stewardship: Manage discipline budgets and timelines for small-to-medium projects, coordinating seamlessly with internal cross-discipline leads, subcontractors, and vendors.

  • Field Engineering & Forensic Analysis: Lead field surveys of existing conditions, identify non-compliant infrastructure, and investigate equipment failures to diagnose malfunctions and recommend mitigation strategies.

  • BIM & Schematic Development: Develop and interpret complex blueprints, technical drawings, and schematics, ensuring all designs align with mechanical, plumbing, and fire codes.

  • Technical Documentation: Write high-level performance requirements, construction specifications, and installation manuals for mission-critical projects.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited college.

  • Citizenship: U.S. Citizenship is required.

  • Security Clearance: Active US Security Clearance.

  • Experience: Minimum of 3+ years of experience, preferably within a design firm setting.

  • Licensure: EIT (Engineer in Training) status.

  • Software Proficiency: Proficiency with 2D/3D CAD (AutoCAD and SolidWorks preferred) and Microsoft Office.

  • Technical Skillset: Proven experience with shop/hand tools and the ability to perform engineering calculations with limited supervision.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Licensure: Active Professional Engineer (PE) license.

  • Advanced Analysis: Experience with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software.

  • Modeling Tools: Proficiency with Trane Trace or Carrier HAP.

  • Sector Knowledge: Deep understanding of commercial/industrial HVAC systems and specialized utility piping.
