To thrive as a Forensic Electrical Engineer, you need in-depth knowledge of electrical systems, strong analytical skills, and a degree in electrical engineering, often paired with a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Familiarity with investigative tools such as circuit analysis software, data loggers, and industry standards like NFPA 921 is highly valued. Attention to detail, critical thinking, clear written communication, and the ability to present technical findings to both technical and non-technical audiences are vital soft skills. These abilities are crucial for accurately determining the causes of electrical failures and effectively communicating findings in legal contexts.
A Forensic Electrical Engineer investigates electrical failures, malfunctions, and accidents to determine their cause. They analyze electrical systems, equipment, and wiring to identify faults, design flaws, or external factors contributing to failures. Their work often supports legal cases, insurance claims, and safety improvements. They may also testify as expert witnesses in court.
Forensic Electrical Engineers commonly work both in the field—inspecting sites and damaged equipment—and in office settings where they analyze data and prepare reports. You may work independently on investigations or as part of multidisciplinary teams that include other engineers, legal experts, and insurance representatives. Collaboration and clear communication are key, as you will often present findings to clients or in a courtroom. The work structure is project-based, with priorities shifting regularly depending on new cases or urgent incidents. This dynamic environment provides opportunities to develop specialized expertise and advance into senior investigative or consulting roles over time.
