Job description

Food Services Assistant performs a variety of routine tasks in the commercial kitchen while maintaining food service facilities in a safe and sanitary condition. The role also performs transportation of food as needed.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Receive and store food deliveries according to Standard Operating Procedures
  • Maintain storage areas in an organized manner including stock rotation as well as labeling and dating of received food items
  • Obtain necessary ingredients from storage area and refrigerator
  • Wash, clean and prepare food in advance of food service production
  • Assist in preparing work areas for service set-up
  • Prepare food for distribution and delivery
  • Wash and sanitize bowls, pans, utensils and food storage and delivery containers
  • Must organize, prepare, and make ready in advance for delivery any food substitution per center upon need.
  • Portioning food servings for specific menu or food restriction meals
  • Deliver clean dishes and utensils to proper kitchen units
  • Clean and sanitize work areas, tables, cabinets and sweep and damp mop floors
  • Assist in maintaining an accurate and up-to-date kitchen inventory
  • Provide safe and timely transportation of food and goods as assigned
  • Accurately maintains all necessary kitchen recordkeeping
  • Cooperate in any investigation related to personnel, licensing, accreditation, or other circumstances
  • Adheres to all Wayne County Health Department Commercial Kitchen licensing regulations and Federal standards regarding food preparation and distribution
  • Attend all agency and departmental meetings and trainings as required
  • Perform other reasonable related duties assigned by immediate supervisor or other management.

COMPETENCIES AND ABILITIES
  • Monitor and maintain inventory and food log paperwork for kitchens at satellite and home base locations
  • Communicate with kitchen Staff to determine special dietary needs
  • Awareness of inventory and portion control for meal preparation
  • Knowledgeable of the impact of environmental factors (food temperature, weather, and storage practices) on meal choices.
  • Ability to read, write and follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to work positively and cooperatively with colleagues and community resource personnel
  • Ability to give and receive constructive feedback
  • Demonstrated commitment to the welfare of the children and families the program serves and to the delivery of quality services.
  • Ability to represent the agency in a professional manner.
  • Knowledge of Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) regulations licensing regulations and Federal standards regarding food preparation and distribution
  • Ability to work with all people regardless of race, gender, religion, age, or ethnic background
  • Ability to obtain ServSafeยฎ Essentials certification within six months of hiring date

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Must obtain ServSafeยฎ Essentials certification within six months (if not held at time of hire)
  • Minimum of 1-year experience in professional level food service positions with demonstrated competence
  • Previous experience transporting goods preferred
  • State of Michigan chauffeur's license (can be obtained after hire)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Good physical mobility with ability to perform repetitive movements
  • Ability to withstand prolonged periods of standing and walking
  • Must be able to lift up to 40-50 pounds
  • May be required work in excessive heat and cold in association with the kitchen environment
