A food picker is responsible for selecting and harvesting ripe or quality produce from farms or fields, often using tools like gloves or harvest baskets. The role requires attention to detail, physical stamina, and adherence to safety and hygiene standards during the picking process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Food Picker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Food Picker, you need physical stamina, attention to detail, and familiarity with safe food handling practices, often supported by basic education and on-the-job training. Proficiency in using handheld scanners, inventory management systems, and sometimes forklifts or pallet jacks is typically required. Strong teamwork, reliability, and time management are soft skills that help individuals excel in this fast-paced environment. These skills ensure accurate order fulfillment, food safety, and efficient workflow in warehouse or agricultural settings.

Why is Gen Z struggling to get jobs?

Gen Z job seekers, including those interested in roles like food pickers, often face challenges such as limited work experience, high competition, and changing employer expectations. Additionally, many entry-level positions require specific skills or certifications, and the availability of part-time or seasonal work can impact their chances of employment.

What are some common challenges faced by Food Pickers and how can they be managed?

Food Pickers often work in fast-paced environments where maintaining accuracy and speed is crucial, especially during peak demand periods. Physical demands, such as standing for long hours and repetitive lifting, are common challenges. To manage these, many employers provide ergonomic equipment, regular breaks, and training on safe handling practices. Additionally, effective communication with team members helps ensure smooth workflow and reduces errors.

What jobs pay 4000 a week without a degree?

Food pickers typically do not earn $4,000 a week; high-paying jobs without a degree often include roles like sales managers, real estate brokers, or skilled trades such as electricians and plumbers, which may require experience or certifications. These positions can offer substantial weekly earnings based on commissions, hours worked, or project completion, but such high income levels are uncommon in entry-level food-related jobs.

Job description

Green Top Farms was founded by a farmer-turned-public-school-teacher who was troubled by the lack of fresh, nutritious foods for many New York families. For the last ten years we have built a high volume food service, catering and delivery business. Throughout that time we have remained deeply involved in working to provide better food resources and education for school children, food pantries, and the broader community. We have also pursued our vision for a more sustainable and equitable food system. We spent the majority of our energies during the COVID Pandemic serving NYC City Agencies in the provision of food for the underserved, as well as non-profit agencies throughout NYC.

Our mission is to build a more sustainable and equitable food system, starting by reconnecting consumers and local farmers. We believe the results of strengthening that connection are better nutrition, more tasty food, greater social justice, and reduced environmental impacts. Our menus reflect this attention to bringing nutritious, delicious food to those who need it most.

Overview:
The Picker Assistant is responsible for accurately gathering ingredients in the correct quantities and passing them to our commis chefs to support efficient production of daily work orders.

What You'll Do:

  • Receive and review pick tickets to accurately select items and place them on designated pick carts.
  • Ensure product quality and proper rotation during picking, following all company and food safety guidelines.
  • Maintain clean and organized stock locations; return misplaced items to their designated areas.

  • Perform regular checks to confirm all products are correctly labeled and stored.
  • Follow a "clean as you go" approach, assisting with waste management tasks such as breaking down boxes and managing garbage.
  • Communicate any shortages, substitutions, or discrepancies during the picking process.
  • Adhere to all company policies and procedures regarding safety, personal hygiene (GMPs), operational standards, and food safety compliance.
  • Practice proper product rotation (FIFO: First In, First Out).
  • Operate pallet jacks or stackers when necessary.

What We Offer:

Green Top Farms provides benefits including medical insurance, sick leave, paid time off that increases with tenure, commuter benefits and potential for bonuses through our Green Shares employee bonus program.
